My younger brother was an excellent cricket player and I... well not only was I lousy but I am also a girl. No other girls in the neighbourhood liked to play cricket and they were considered poor players too.
Once all the boys would come to the park to play, the teams would get divided. Two captains would be chosen and they would one by one get to pick one player of their choice.
Now picking good players is the single most important factor to winning these games and given my poor skill set I should have been picked last of all. But whenever my brother became captain he would choose me before anyone else. Every time. Without worrying about winning or losing. All so I would not feel left out.

When I was about 10 years old, my father bought a number locking briefcase. I wanted to crack the number. It was easy, it was a combination of the numbers only, and I had plenty of time, so I started guessing from 000 to 999 (yeah!).
Finally the briefcase opened at 081. I was like Yahoo!! ... and then moved on.
My father is a reserved man. He would never come and hug/kiss me, push me away with a smile when I kiss him, but would have that caring look for me in his eyes.

I took my 4 yo grandson to the park the other day. He was running, playing, happily meeting new friends. He suddenly stopped and was telling his new friend, "That's my grandma!" And proudly pointing me out as if I was something unusually special. He was proud of me! I am a very plain, ordinary person, but my grandson loves me so much that he believes I am special enough to show off to his new friends. I felt loved. Of course, in another 8 years, I'm sure I won't seem quite so special to my grandson, but I will enjoy being 'special' for the time being.

Specific to India.
It is really uncomfortable for the parents to say "I love you".
So instead they say things like, "Thoda aur khao"(Eat some more),
"Gaadi dheere chalaana"(Drive your car/bike slow), "Jaldi so jaana "(sleep early) etc.
What they mean is "I love you and I care about you".
