(15) THE PHYSICIAN GIVES MEDICINE TO THE PRINCESS TO MADE HER GROW UP FAST
昔有國(guó)王,產(chǎn)生一女,喚醫(yī)語(yǔ)言:“為我與藥,立使長(zhǎng)大。”
Once upon a time there was a king who brought a daughter into the world. He sent for the doctor and asked him, "Could you prescribe some drugs for my daughter in order to make her grow up faster?"
醫(yī)師答言:“我與良藥,能使即大。但今卒無(wú)方,須求索。比得藥頃,王要莫看。待與藥已,然后示王。”
The physician replied, "I have a good prescription for her. However, I don't have the medicine on hand. I should look for it. Your Majesty must not see her at the time of my searching for the medicine. I'll present her to your Majesty after she has taken it."
于是即便遠(yuǎn)方取藥。經(jīng)十二年,得藥來還,與女令服,將示于王。王見歡喜,即自念言:“實(shí)是良醫(yī),與我女藥,能令卒長(zhǎng)。”便敕左右,賜以珍寶。
Then the physician went to a remote region in search of the medicine. He found it and came back twelve years later. Having taken the medicine, the daughter was led to the king who was happy to see her. Then he said to himself, "He's a good physician. My daughter has indeed grown after taking his medicine." The king then ordered his attendants to reward the doctor lavishly with gems.
時(shí)諸人等,笑王無(wú)智,不曉籌量生來年月,見其長(zhǎng)大,謂是藥力。
All the courtiers derided the king for his ignorance to such an extent that he did not know to think of the year in which his daughter was born. The king believed that her growing was due to the effect of the medicine.
世人亦爾。詣善知識(shí),而啟之言:“我欲求道,愿見教授,使我立得善知識(shí)。”
So are the people in general. They will visit a wise man and say, "We should like to attain the path of Enlightenment. Please instruct us that we may immediately receive the transcendent wisdom."
師以方便故,教令坐禪,觀十二緣起,漸積眾德,獲阿羅漢,倍踴躍歡喜,而作是言:“快哉大師!速能令我證最妙法。”
By means of expediency, the master will guide them to practice meditation and contemplate the Twelve Links connected with the causation of rebirth. After gradually accumulating all kinds of merits, they reach the Arahant's degree. TheN they will jump with joy and exclaim, "How fast it is! Our great master, you have made us obtain so quickly the quintessential truth."

?、俳褡錈o(wú)方:今卒,現(xiàn)在倉(cāng)猝之中;無(wú)方,指沒有藥方。
②比得藥頃:比,到、等;頃,時(shí)。等得到藥時(shí)。
?、垭罚夯实鄣脑t令。
?、芑I量:籌劃計(jì)算。
?、菰勆浦R(shí):詣,到;善知識(shí),指正直而有德行,能引人入菩提正道之人,此處指修行有道的高僧?!斗ㄈA經(jīng)》中有:“益我菩薩之道,名善知識(shí)。”
?、拮U:佛教術(shù)語(yǔ)。是僧人的一種靜慮思維的方法。
?、呤壠穑杭词蚓?無(wú)明、行、識(shí)、名色、六入、觸、受、愛、取、有、生、老死)。是佛教對(duì)人生的觀察、解釋。分別為:老死,這是觀察人生求得解脫的出發(fā)點(diǎn);還有生、有、取、愛、受、觸、六入(眼、耳、鼻、舌、身、意)、名色(即身心的結(jié)合)、識(shí)、行、無(wú)明(指對(duì)佛教緣起、無(wú)常、無(wú)我的不理解)。這就是十二因緣的基本內(nèi)容。(參見高楊、荊三隆《佛教起源論》)
?、喟⒘_漢:破一切煩惱的得道高僧,即最高的悟道者。
白話:
從前有個(gè)國(guó)王生了一個(gè)女兒后,把宮中的醫(yī)師召來對(duì)他說:“給我一種藥,能使女兒吃了立即長(zhǎng)大。”醫(yī)師回答說:“我可以給這種藥,使公主立即長(zhǎng)大,但眼下還沒有這種藥方,必須去尋找。在我找藥期間,國(guó)王您不要看,等公主服藥后,再請(qǐng)您見公主。”于是他就到遠(yuǎn)方去找藥了。十二年后,他采藥回來。把藥給公主吃了后,帶她去見國(guó)王。國(guó)王見了很高興,自言自語(yǔ)說:“確實(shí)是良醫(yī),給我女兒的藥,能讓她立即長(zhǎng)大。”便詔令左右的侍從,給醫(yī)師賞賜珍珠寶物。當(dāng)時(shí)的人們都嘲笑國(guó)王的無(wú)知,不懂得起碼的籌劃計(jì)算,不管女兒的年齡,看見她長(zhǎng)大了,便認(rèn)為是藥的作用。
世俗的人也是這樣,到修行有道的高僧面前說:“我想得到明師的指點(diǎn),使我很快得到對(duì)人生的透徹領(lǐng)悟。”明師從基礎(chǔ)入門開始,教他坐禪,拋除一切塵念的靜慮,領(lǐng)會(huì)佛教對(duì)人生社會(huì)的觀察和解釋,積累認(rèn)識(shí)各種行為的規(guī)范,達(dá)到屏棄一切人生煩惱的修悟境界。這人聽后歡呼雀躍,說道:“真快樂啊!大法師,你這么快就讓我能達(dá)到佛學(xué)的最高境界。”
辨析:
要想成就任何一件事,都必須付出相應(yīng)的努力和代價(jià),坐享其成是不行的。應(yīng)該承認(rèn),機(jī)遇的不同,形成了人與人之間的差異。但機(jī)遇往往垂青于有準(zhǔn)備的大腦,上天的恩澤只會(huì)賜給勤勉的人,這一點(diǎn)在科學(xué)和思想領(lǐng)域里,早已被眾多的事例所證明。我們認(rèn)為,勤奮是大富的前提,大富不僅要勤,還必須有富的心志和機(jī)遇。然而現(xiàn)實(shí)生話中,人們往往只看重結(jié)果,只看到春花的爛漫,卻忽略了它歷經(jīng)酷暑、秋風(fēng)、嚴(yán)寒的磨難和考驗(yàn)。人生最珍貴的,不都是靠自己的努力換來的嗎?

圣法法師在《百喻經(jīng)故事廣釋》里說:“唐朝玄奘法師去印度,花了二三年的時(shí)間才到達(dá),現(xiàn)在坐飛機(jī)不要二三天就可以到。從前做什么事情都要靠人工,現(xiàn)在事事都有機(jī)器代勞,科學(xué)進(jìn)步確實(shí)帶來人類不少的幸福。醫(yī)藥可以治各種的病,延長(zhǎng)人的壽命,卻不能使人很快就長(zhǎng)大。
學(xué)佛首要皈依三寶,親近善知識(shí),修六度萬(wàn)行積功累德。有人卻偽稱有什么秘訣可以馬上得道,不就是故事中的國(guó)王,欲剛生的孩子要立刻長(zhǎng)大,一樣的可笑!
佛是無(wú)上的正知正覺者,其慈悲智慧福德神通都是無(wú)量。他是累生累劫修來的,佛家雖有頓悟之法門,也是一半靠用功,一半是宿世的善根利智,才有頓悟的可能。頓悟以后也須漸修——積功累德、方能成佛,世間沒有一步登天的事情。”
