英語(yǔ)早間課堂:教您一招說(shuō)金錢(qián)(3)

資本主義社會(huì)奉信金錢(qián)萬(wàn)能(money talks)，他們認(rèn)為私人財(cái)產(chǎn)是神圣不可侵犯的。而社會(huì)主義社會(huì)崇尚精神領(lǐng)域的東西，倡導(dǎo)崇高的道德標(biāo)準(zhǔn)，比如要以己奉公，誠(chéng)信，可靠，說(shuō)話(huà)算數(shù)。那么“說(shuō)話(huà)算數(shù)”用地道美語(yǔ)怎么說(shuō)呢?這正是我今天要拋出的說(shuō)“金錢(qián)”的招。

我們就先來(lái)聽(tīng)2個(gè)例子：

拋招-1：Jack, you're talking big about how great your team is and how bad they'll beat my team Saturday. Okay, let's bet fifty dollars on who wins. Let's see you put your money where your mouth is!

注釋1：talk big：吹牛，說(shuō)大話(huà) talk big about：吹牛說(shuō).....，說(shuō)......的大話(huà)

Eg . He loved to talk big and brag about a variety of things to other people. 他喜歡說(shuō)大話(huà)，很多事情都喜歡跟人亂掰一通。

Eg . Tybalt likes to talk big and wouldn't stand a chance against Romeo! 提伯特喜歡說(shuō)大話(huà)，他絕不是羅密歐的對(duì)手!

注釋2：bet some money on sth：用多少錢(qián)做打賭......

Eg. I will bet 100 dollars on getting through the final exams this term. 我敢用100元來(lái)打賭我這個(gè)學(xué)期期末考試可以及格。

拋招-2：The governor of our State talks about the need to improve public education but puts no money where his mouth is. He simply uses education as a reason to raise taxes but he never intends to spend money on it.

注釋1：public education：公共教育 use... as：利用......作為 raise tax：增加稅收 spend some money on sth：把錢(qián)花在......

注釋2：put no money where one's mouth is：說(shuō)話(huà)不算數(shù)，沒(méi)有實(shí)際行動(dòng)

Eg . If you put money where your mouth is this time, it is hard to make me buy your story again. 如果你這次說(shuō)話(huà)不算數(shù)，那么再要讓我相信你很難了。

(譯：我們州的州長(zhǎng)老是說(shuō)有必要改進(jìn)公共教育，但是在這方面并沒(méi)有實(shí)際行動(dòng)。他只是利用教育作為增加稅收的理由，但是從來(lái)也沒(méi)有把錢(qián)用在教育工作上的意圖。)

接招：上面的2個(gè)例句中都用到了同一個(gè)詞語(yǔ)：put one's money where one's mouth is。這是一條動(dòng)詞性習(xí)慣用語(yǔ)。從字面上看，這個(gè)語(yǔ)的意思是把某人的錢(qián)放在他的嘴邊。我們知道，人們常用錢(qián)來(lái)打賭表示肯定會(huì)做某事, 如果你告訴別人你能做某事或你相信某事，那么一個(gè)好辦法就是用錢(qián)作賭注，表示你支持自己的說(shuō)法，讓別人相信自己。這個(gè)習(xí)語(yǔ)的意思正是來(lái)自于此種概念，意思是“說(shuō)話(huà)算話(huà)，許下的話(huà)要算數(shù)，用行動(dòng)支持你的說(shuō)法。注意，這個(gè)習(xí)語(yǔ)特別是指某人采取實(shí)際行動(dòng)來(lái)完成曾經(jīng)許諾過(guò)的。其英文解釋是這樣的：The idiom is used to show one’s support for what you say or something that you really believe through your actions, rather than just one’s words.

名著Life 中就有這么一句話(huà)：The daughter usually reacts by bringing home a series of unsuitable males to see if Daddy will put his money where his mouth is.女兒通常會(huì)把好幾個(gè)不合適的男子帶回家，看看爸爸是否會(huì)說(shuō)話(huà)算數(shù)。
