Meanwhile, all the boats tore on. The repeated specific allusions of Flask to "that whale," as he called thefictitious monster which he declared to be incessantly tantalizing his boat's bow with its tail--these allusions of his were at times so vivid and life-like, that they would cause some one or two of his men to snatcha fearful look over his shoulder. But this was against all rule; for the oarsmen must put out their eyes, and ram a skewer through their necks; usages announcing that they must have no organs but ears; and no limbs but arms, in these CRItical moments.

It was a sight full of quick wonder and awe! The vast swells of the omnipotent sea; the surging, hollow roarthey made, as they rolled along the eight gunwales, like gigantic bowls in a boundless bowling-green; the brief suspended agony of the boat, as it would tip for an instant on the knife-like edge of the sharper waves,that almost seemed threatening to cut it in two; the sudden profound dip into the watery glens and hollows; the keen spurrings and goadings to gain the top of the opposite hill; the headlong, sled-like slide down itsother side;--all these, with the CRIes of the headsmen and harpooneers, and the shuddering gasps of the oarsmen, with the wondrous sight of the ivory Pequod bearing down upon her boats with outstretched sails, like awild hen after her screaming brood;--all this was thrilling.

這真是叫人看了又敬畏又驚奇！全能的大海的滾滾浪濤，澎湃空泛的號(hào)嘯，沖擊著八面船舷，象是在一望無(wú)際的木球草地上滾著的大木球；小艇給掛在浪峰上那種短促的呻吟聲，仿佛當(dāng)即擦上了浪潮的鋒利刀刃，幾乎眼看就要給割成兩段，突然間又急墜進(jìn)了水汪汪的溪谷和洼地里，如象用靴刺踢馬催迫它去爭(zhēng)奪對(duì)面的山頭，又從那邊的另一個(gè)斜坡疾如雪橇滑了下去；所有這一切，加上指揮人和標(biāo)槍手的叫喊聲，槳手們的抖抖索索的喘氣聲，又加上那只象瘋狂的母雞在追它那些嚇得尖叫的小雞的象牙骨的"裴廓德號(hào)"，張滿篷帆直對(duì)它四只小艇沖過(guò)去的奇觀。這一切都是教人驚心動(dòng)魄的。
