Well, you know, he is barely tall enough for his feet to reach the pedals of his piano, but nine-year-old Marc Yu is already a veteran of the concert halls. His musical talent singled him out as something out of the ordinary at the tender age of two, and earned him comparisons to another child prodigy, Mozart. Well, we caught up with Marc Yu after he made his debut at the Royal Albert Hall in London and asked him for his thoughts on music and his future.
MARC YU, MUSICAL PRODIGY
I can remember how I started to play. I was at a friend's party when I was about two-and-a-half and I heard some children singing "Mary Had a Little.
Lamb," so I jumped on the piano and played out "Mary Had a Little Lamb." But I can remember very well when I was three making my concert debut on the piano playing a G Major sonatina by Beethoven. "Mary Had a Little Lamb" is, of course, a nursery rhyme, but you've got to start somewhere.
My job is to interpret the meaning of the piece8 to the audience. That is actually my job. And Beethoven wants the artist to do that, so I don't think it's that hard for me.
Being called "Little Mozart" is flattering. But it might be a little bit silly because Mozart was a great composer. His mind automatically composed melodies. But my goal is to become a virtuoso, and Mozart was just a good pianist. He wasn't a grand virtuoso, like Franz Liszt.
My goal isn't really to become a composer, but what people really mean by that is saying that Mozart is the general model for children who are amazing musicians, and my playing is brilliant for a child, so I usually take it as a compliment.
