49課 The end of a dream

Tired of sleeping on the floor, a young man inTeheran saved up for years to buy a real bed. Forthe first time in his life, he became the proud ownerof a bed which had springs and a mattress. Becausethe weather was very hot, he carried the bed on tothe roof of his house. He slept very well for the firsttwo nights, but on the third night, a storm blew up.A gust of wind swept the bed off the roof and sent itcrashing into the courtyard below. The young mandid not wake up until the bed had struck the ground.Although the bed was smashed to pieces, the man was miraculously unhurt. When hewoke up, he was still on the mattress. Glancing at the bits of wood and metal that layaround him, the man sadly picked up the mattress and carried it into his house. After he? hadput it on the floor, he promptly went to sleep again.

盡管床摔成了碎片，但年輕人卻奇跡般地沒有受傷。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn) 本句although弓|導(dǎo)讓步狀語(yǔ)從句。初學(xué)者一定牢記：在讓步狀語(yǔ)從句中although 遠(yuǎn)不 與but同時(shí)出現(xiàn),這與漢語(yǔ)中“盡管……但是……”-的表達(dá)截然不同。原句還可以改為：

The bed was smashed to pieces, but the man was miraculously unhurt.

8、When he woke up, he was still on the mattress.

在他醒來(lái)時(shí)，他仍然躺在床墊上。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn) 人位于床上，與床有接觸面，所以用介詞on。
