49課 The end of a dream

Tired of sleeping on the floor, a young man inTeheran saved up for years to buy a real bed. Forthe first time in his life, he became the proud ownerof a bed which had springs and a mattress. Becausethe weather was very hot, he carried the bed on tothe roof of his house. He slept very well for thefirst two nights, but on the third night, a stormblew up. A gust of wind swept the bed off theroof and sent it crashing into the courtyardbelow. The young man did not wake up until thebed had struck the ground. Although the bed was smashed to pieces, the man wasmiraculously unhurt. When he woke up, he was still on the mattress. Glancing at the bits ofwood and metal that lay around him, the man sadly picked up the mattress and carried it intohis house. After he? had put it on the floor, he promptly went to sleep again.

頭兩天晚上，他睡得非常好。但第三天晚上起了風暴。

語言點1 序數(shù)詞放在基數(shù)詞前面表示“前……個”或“后……個”：

for the first two nights 頭兩天夜里;for the first few days 在開始的幾天里

語言點2 blow up意為“形成” ：A storm blew up.風暴驟起。

語言點1 sweep sth. off somewhere把某物從某處刮下來

語言點2 crashing into the courtyard below是現(xiàn)在分詞作賓語it的補足語。

6、The young man did not wake up until the bed had struck the ground.

那年輕人直到床撞到地上才醒了過來。

語言點 這是一個典型的“not...until...”句式結構，應譯為“直到……才”：

Last night I did not go to bed until I finished the writing.

昨晚，我直到完成了寫作才去睡覺。
