A team of artists are offering adoring pet parents the opportunity to give their fur babies the royal treatment — by painting Renaissance-style “pawtraits.”
“We give you the opportunity to see your pet in a special majestic image,” hypes the Royal Pet Pawtrait website, where adoring animal owners can order custom portraits for $69 to $134.
It’s a quick three-step process to turn Rover into royalty: First, owners must pick a regal outfit, then upload a photo of their pooch, pick a canvas size — and pay up. If the pup has a favorite toy, the artists can incorporate it into the portrait, too.
Pawtrait’s founder Hanna Kostenko, 31, says she was inspired to start the company after seeing the 2016 film “The Secret Life of Pets.”
“[After] watching it I definitely knew what I need to do and how to make it work,” Kostenko says. She and her co-workers — who are based around the globe — take up to five days to create the portraits based on images of kings, princesses, nobles and military figures that were painted during the 14th to 17th centuries.
Kostenko especially loves imagining the animals’ possible background stories.
Kostenko
“Imagine the secret life of a pet — she is a royal princess and rules the dog world,” she tells Caters News, listing possible dream fates for pets. “[Maybe] he is the greatest general, who conquered France with his mouse guard and got the best Roquefort cheese; maybe he is an admiral of the cat navy and owns all the fish in the ocean.”
Pawtraits aren’t the only luxury people are buying to spoil their pets: A recent study found that nearly half of millennials surveyed have gone into pet debt, spending thousands a year on their cats and dogs. There’s even a rise in “pet-nup” fur baby custody negotiations and “pawternity leave” and the invention of Uber Pet earlier this year.
It’s no wonder, really, considering a third of parents prefer their pets over their kids.
