A:Hi,Vivian, how are you?
B:Fine, thanks! Sam, how about your holiday?
A:It’s wonderful! I had a trip to Britain with my attracted by the University of Oxford.
B:Really? I’ve been meaning to go out there for many years, since I knew that Oxford was the earliest university in the English-speaking World.
A:Absolutely, it is a place worthy to visit. You can see majestic and splendid old buildings everywhere. However, I was moved by its tough and tensile spirit, even at the time of great tribulation, rather than its buildings.
B:I'm confused. What makes you say that?
A:Well, the history of the University was extremely tortuous. There are conflicts between townspeople and university students at the very beginning of its foundation. It almost came to an end for several times. I remembered that teaching had suspended for two times, one was in 1209 and the other in 1355.
B:Oh, I have heard about the riot happened on the St. Scholastica Day in 1355. It can be considered as the most notorious② event in the history of Oxford.
A:Maybe! However, the Oxford Movement broke up in 1833 also had an immense impact on the development of the University. It was a religious movement arguing for the recovery of traditional aspects of the Christian faith.
B:Luckily, the University of Oxford grew up eventually to the world’s leading academic institute. By the way, what’s the concrete date of its foundation? Someone said that it was built up for more than 800 years, while someone stated for some 900 years.
A:Actually, the University doesn't have a clear date of foundation. However, teaching existed there in some forms as far back as 1096. Although both All Souls College and University College have repeated claimed that they own documents, which provide that teaching in Oxford started in the year 825, it was not accepted by the public.
B:Oh,I see. Have you ever visited the oldest museum in the UK? I caught sight of it in a book, and it seems to be called the Ashmolean Museum.
A:Yes, I have! Its full name is Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, which is on Beaumont Street. It is also the world’s first university museum, whose first building was built between 1678 and 1683.
B:Great! Did you see the Alfred Jewel, the one stolen in the British television series Inspector Morsel
A:Yes, I did. It is about 6 centimeters long, made of filigreed gold, enclosing a highly polished piece of quartz crystal beneath which is set a cloisonne enamel plaque. The Jewel can not be more beautiful!
B:I'm so eager to see it with my own eyes!
A:Well, I have taken lots of pictures, would you like to have a_ look at them?
B:Of course! I wonder if it is true that the jeweliy had been stolen.
A:No. Though thieves came into the museum in 1999, it was not lost. They aimed to steal a painting.
B: So lucky. It’s to be regretted to lose such a precious jewelry.
A:Quite right. Let’s make an appointment to my home to look at those photos!
B:Well, what about tomorrow afternoon? We don’t have class then.
A: Ok! I’m looking forward to your coming on time! See you then!
B: See you!
再見!
