Chapter 5
第五章
Intonation
語調(diào)
Intonation is the musical score of a language. Each tone has a special meaning. Intonation creates the melody of the language we speak. The standard American dialect involves a variety of pitch changes that reflect a mood and feeling about everything that's being said. Different types of sentences have different intonation patterns. The American intonation dictates liaisons and pronunciation, and it indicates mood and meaning. Intonation refers to the various tones of the voice. By using different tones, the speaker gives meaning to the words.

Three Ways to Make Intonation 語調(diào)的三種表達(dá)方法
What exactly are the mechanics of intonation? What changes when you go to the top or when you put stress on a word? There are three ways to stress a word.
不同的語調(diào)究竟是如何實(shí)現(xiàn)的?當(dāng)你在念到句子的主要部分或當(dāng)你要重讀一個(gè)詞時(shí),語調(diào)又會(huì)有怎樣的變化?在這里,我們來討論三種表達(dá)語調(diào)時(shí)重讀單詞的方法。
1. Get louder or raise the volume. This is not a very sophisticated way of doing it, but it will definitely command attention.
大點(diǎn)聲或者提高你的音量。這并不是很復(fù)雜的做法,不過,你肯定會(huì)吸引別人的注意力。
I didn't say he stole the money.
2. Stretch the word out or lengthen the word that you want to draw attention to.
把你要引起別人注意的單詞拉長或延伸單詞的發(fā)音。
I didn't saaaaaay he stole the money.
3. Change pitch
聲調(diào)的變化
I didn't (pause) say he stole the money.
