(80) TO TAKE AN ENEMA
昔有一人患下部病,醫(yī)言:“當(dāng)須倒灌,乃可瘥耳。”便集灌具,欲以灌之。醫(yī)未至頃,便取服之,腹脹欲死,不能自勝。醫(yī)既來至,怪其所以,即便問之:“何故如是?”即答醫(yī)言:“向時(shí)灌藥,我取服之,是故欲死。”
Once upon a time, there was a man who had a pain in his rear. The doctor said it would be healed by giving an enema. He immediately went to fetch the instruments for that purpose. The patient took the drug before the physician came back. His belly became inflated beyond description. After his return, the doctor wondered what had happened to the patient and asked him the cause of it. To the physician, he replied, "I've just taken the drug for enema. That's why I'm dying."
醫(yī)聞是語,深責(zé)之言:“汝大愚人,不解方便。”即更以余藥服之,方得吐下,爾乃得瘥。”如此愚人,為世所笑。
After hearing these words, the doctor scolded him in following words, "You are the most stupid man I've ever met. You are acting against all senses." Then he gave him other drugs. The patient vomited and was cured. Such a stupid man was laughed at by the people at large.
凡夫之人,亦復(fù)如是。欲修學(xué)禪觀種種方法,應(yīng)觀不凈,反觀數(shù)息;應(yīng)數(shù)息者,反觀六界。顛倒上下,無有根本,徒喪身命,為其所困。不諮良師,顛倒禪法,如彼愚人飲服不凈。
This is also held to be true with the common people. The contemplation in meditation comprises many methods. Those who practice meditating on the uncleanness of the human bodies are not appropriate to practice on the counting of the breathings, whereas those who practice the counting of the breathings should not practice the meditating on the six parts of a human body. To turn it upside down without following a fundamental principle will cause life itself. Those who bluntly practice the contemplation in meditation without consulting a good master are just like that stupid man taking the wrong thing for his illness.

②六界:又叫六大,地(骨肉)、水(血)、火(暖熱)、風(fēng)(呼吸)、空(耳鼻之孔空)、識(苦、樂)這六大假合起來,構(gòu)成身體。
白話:
曾有一個人腹部患病了。醫(yī)生說:「需灌一下腸,才會好?!贡闳グ迅鞣N灌具拿攏來,準(zhǔn)備給他洗腸。醫(yī)生離去的那會兒,這人取藥吃了下去,結(jié)果腹脹得要命,無法忍受。醫(yī)生回來一見,奇怪了,就問:「為什么會這樣?」他答道:「剛才的灌藥,我吃下去了,所以難受得要死?!贯t(yī)生聽罷,狠狠責(zé)備道:「你這大愚人,不懂用法,從肛門灌的,哪是口服的!」隨即又用另外的藥給他吃了下去,方才吐了出來,病才好。這樣的愚人,遭世人的嗤笑。
凡夫俗子也是這樣,想修學(xué)禪觀的種種方法,應(yīng)觀不凈的,反而觀數(shù)息,應(yīng)觀數(shù)息的,反而觀地水火風(fēng)空識等六界的不凈和假合。這樣顛倒了上下,不了解其中的根本意義,就白白地把生命的大好時(shí)光無謂地耗費(fèi)掉了,到頭來還要被它困擾住。不諮詢良師,顛倒了禪法,盲修瞎練,就像那個愚人飲服灌藥一樣。
