All quiet, sparse are mist-veiled willow trees;
In painted bower a flute wafts with the breeze.
She leans on rails. Who calls “Rosette” in a voice low,
When incense burnt, to bed she wants to go?
The water clock shows it’s midnight.

Leaving the square courtyard steeped in moonlight.
East of the white-washed wall a small bridge arches low.
Rising in the shade of flowers, she tries
To catch with her fan flitting fireflies.
