Frances McDormand is one of the few talents to receive the three important awards of acting, with a Tony, two Oscars and two Emmys under her belt.
Her latest work, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, came out in Chinese mainland cinemas on March 2. The movie earned her praise and led to her winning the Oscar for best actress of 2018. In the film, she plays a mother who rents three billboards to call attention to her daughter’s unsolved murder after the local authorities fail to catch the killer.
The 60-year-old US actress decided to take the part because she wanted to be a “crone”. “A friend told me there are three stages of a woman’s life – maid, mother, crone. Crone has been taken away from us, and I want it back,” McDormand told The Times. “A crone is a sage and has wisdom, and is there for emergency situations. But if you can’t identify us, if we look just like you – well, that’s one of the reasons we’re such an undeveloped and immature culture.”
