1. bookworm = someone who reads a lot.
我們中文里有與之完全對應(yīng)的翻譯,叫做“書蟲”,整天埋頭看書的人(someone who always has his or her head in a book)。例如:
Chase spent all day in the library revising for the big exam. He’s turned into such a bookworm!
有的時候我們會用bookish形容“書呆子”(someone who’s interested in reading and studying, rather than in more active or practical things),不過經(jīng)常語氣里含有貶義。
2. copycat= someone who copies the work of another.
(This word is used especially by children about and to a person who copies what somebody else does because they have no ideas of their own)。例如:
Hazel was accused of being a copycat when the teacher saw her looking at Rob’s exam answers.
3. teacher’s pet = the teacher’s favorite student
Pet除了有“寵物”的意思之外,還指那些受重視的人,而且往往這種重視看起來是對其他人不公平的(a pet is a person who is given special attention by somebody, especially in a way that seems unfair to other people)。例如:
Candida didn’t mind being the teacher’s pet because she always got good grades.
4. dropout = a person who leaves school or college before they have finished their studies
Mike studied extra hard for his exams because he did not want to be a high school dropout.
它的動詞形式是drop out of,例如:
She started a degree but dropped out after only a year.
5. hit the books = to begin to study hard
Jonas hit the books when he realized that he had a very important exam the next day.
6. pass with flying colors = to pass something with a high score
“with flying colors” means very well or with a very high mark/grade,用在取得好成績的時候簡直再地道不過了!例如:
Julian was uncertain about the important exam even though his teacher told him that he would pass with flying colors!
7. skip class = to not go to school when you should
Martin was tempted to skip class because his next lesson involved a difficult math test.
Skip這里的意思就是to not do something that you usually do or should do,比如你想減肥,于是你可能skip dinner,或者中午太忙,就skip lunch等等。
