UK retail sales fell 5.9% in May, BRC survey shows

UK retail sales continued to fall in May but the pace of decline eased as shoppers ventured out in warm weather, an industry survey showed.

Total sales fell 5.9% in May - an improvement on April's 19.1% plunge but still a weak reading compared with a record low in May 2019, according to the British Retail Consortium's monthly monitor.

With restaurants closed, food sales rose. Clothing and beauty sales improved slightly as restrictions on meeting up relaxed. DIY, fitness equipment, games and office supplies sold well with many people spending more time at home.

But non-essential categories such as fashion continued to suffer and the BRC warned that as stores reopen many retailers will struggle with lower activity and changed shopping habits as consumers move online more rapidly.

Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the BRC, said: "For those shops whose doors remain shuttered it was once again a tough month and even those who stayed open suffered reduced footfall and huge costs implementing social distancing measures.

"Many retailers will be anxious to see whether demand returns to our high streets when non-essential shops reopen from 15 June. Weak consumer confidence and social distancing rules are likely to hold back sales."

Economist Samuel Tombs said: "Retail sales should recover further from June 15 … and they should be supported over the summer by some households making purchases that they deferred during the peak of the pandemic.

Macroeconomics said the figures indicated a 15% month on month increase in retail sales excluding petrol. But a separate survey by Barclaycardsh showed overall sales, including services, down 26.7% from a year earlier in May." But he predicted sales down 2% from pre-virus levels in the second half because of weak consumer confidence affected by job losses.
