South Korea’s Yonhap news agency cited an official from South Korea’s presidential office as saying Mr Moon had already arrived and been waiting for Mr Trump at the joint security area inside the DMZ.
A senior Trump administration official had previously asserted Mr Trump would not visit the heavily fortified border zone, saying the practice was “becoming a little bit of a cliche, frankly.”
Weather conditions near the DMZ appeared somewhat hazy on Wednesday morning but the region was free of any cloud cover and was not expected to experience strong winds, based on satellite imagery and forecast data provided by AccuWeather.
Sarah Sanders, White House press secretary, said the visit by Mr Trump and Mr Moon to the area would have been a “historic moment” because a US and South Korean president have never visited the DMZ together. “The effort shows the strength and importance of the alliance between the two countries,” said Ms Sanders.
