Donald Trump accused Democrats of creating “phoney polls” as the Republican stepped up his claim that the White House race was “rigged”, with opinion surveys showing him falling further behind Hillary Clinton two weeks before the election.

“Major story that the Dems are making up phoney polls in order to suppress the Trump. We are going to WIN!” Mr Trump tweeted yesterday. “We are winning and the press is refusing to report it. Don’t let them fool you — get out and vote! #DrainTheSwamp on November 8th!”

In the 16 months since launching his campaign, Mr Trump has oozed confidence, even when polls were less than flattering. On several occasions over the past week, however, he has mixed his usual defiant talk about victory on November 8 with an air of resignation. He has reinforced this with claims that the election is rigged, which many see as an attempt to explain any loss.

Mr Trump had sailed through most of the campaign without seeing his divisive rhetoric denting his prospects. But the discovery of a 2005 video, in which he had boasted in vulgar language about groping women, followed by almost a dozen claims of sexual assault, have created headwinds for his campaign. Mr Trump was also widely panned for refusing to guarantee during the final presidential debate that he would respect the election result.

According to an average of recent national polls compiled by Real Clear Politics, Mrs Clinton leads her rival by 5.8 percentage points. While the most recent survey — from Rasmussen — showed Mr Trump with a 2-point lead, the latest ABC News tracker poll found him trailing Mrs Clinton by 12 points.

More significantly, Mrs Clinton has pulled ahead in several swing states, including Florida and North Carolina, where the race had been tight. She has also preserved her lead in Pennsylvania, and almost erased his advantage in Ohio, the rust-belt state where Mr Trump had been performing well because of a large number of disaffected white, working-class Democratic men.

Illustrating how the contours of the race have changed in once unimaginable ways, Mrs Clinton has a thin lead in Arizona, which has only voted Democrat once — Bill Clinton in 1996 — since Harry Truman in 1948. Mr Trump’s lead in Texas, one of the most Republican states, is only 4.8 points. En route to losing the presidency to Barack Obama, John McCain won Texas 56-44 per cent in 2008, while Mitt Romney took the state 57-41 per cent four years ago.

Top Republicans are increasingly concerned that Mr Trump will hurt the prospects of the party keeping its Senate majority and endanger its previously unassailable majority in the House.

Campaigning in Nevada on Sunday, Mr Obama accused Republican politicians of promoting Mr Trump, as the president attempted to tie them to the Trump campaign. Mrs Clinton has turned her attention to helping some down-ballot Democrats in a bid to maximise her chances of having a Congress that would work with her as president.

In the final weeks of the campaign, Mrs Clinton has launched a series of ads attacking her rival on everything from his rhetoric towards women to his disparaging comments about the Muslim parents of a US soldier who died in Iraq.

Mr Trump has focused on the trove of leaked emails from the Clinton campaign, including some that suggest she has a public position and another private position.

He has repeatedly hammered her on the fact that she once said the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal was the “gold standard” before coming out against the deal in the Democratic primary as part of efforts to fend off a tougher than expected challenge from Bernie Sanders.
