「Eleventh hour」不是「11點(diǎn)」 英語里的數(shù)字千萬別亂用！

Eleventh hour:

The last possible moment for doing something.

做某事的最后時(shí)刻。

例如：

an eleventh-hour decision

一個(gè)最后時(shí)刻的決定

既然說到11，我們順便來說說英文中其他的數(shù)字。

數(shù)字在英文(尤其是俚語)中，扮演者非常重要的角色。積累一些與數(shù)字有關(guān)的短語，不僅僅能避免因?yàn)槔斫忮e(cuò)誤引發(fā)的尷尬，還能使你的語言增色不少。

a thousand and one (something) :

A huge or burdensome amount of something. Often followed by "to (do something)."

例如：

I can't drive you to the mall, I already have a thousand and one things to get done today.

我不能開車送你去商場了，今天事情太多了。

a thing or two

a few points of criticism about someone or something.

對于某事的一些意見或者批評。

例如：

Let me tell you a thing or two about your messy yard!

我對你亂七八糟的花園有點(diǎn)意見。

Two is company, (but) three's a crowd.

兩個(gè)人可以作伴，三個(gè)人就有點(diǎn)擠。

A way of asking a third person to leave because you want to be alone with someone. (Often implies that you want to be alone with the person because you are romantically interested in him or her.)

讓第三者離開，因?yàn)槟阆雴为?dú)跟某人在一起。(通常表示你喜歡這個(gè)人。)

例如：

When Lucy followed Mark and Nora into the drawing room, Nora turned to her and said, "Two's company, but three's a crowd."

four-one-one (411)

n. information; the details about something or someone. (In the U.S., the telephone number of directory assistance or information is 411.)

信息;某事或某人的細(xì)節(jié)。(在美國，查詢信息的電話號碼是411.)

例如：

What’s the 411 on the new guy in the office?

辦公室里新來的男生是什么來頭?

a bunch of fives

slang A fist.

指“拳頭”。

例如：

That kid is in the nurse's office with a bloody nose because the bully gave him a bunch of fives in the face.

護(hù)士辦公室里的孩子在流鼻血，因?yàn)槟莻€(gè)惡霸往他臉上打了他一拳。
