Learning Chinese is not easy!

1. Is Chinese hard? 外國(guó)人學(xué)漢語(yǔ)難嗎？

It’s easier if you are Korean or Japanese. But if you are westerner, you have that fear.

對(duì)于西方人來(lái)說(shuō)，Chinese is really hard.

Why is it hard for westerners to learn Chinese? 為什么西方人學(xué)漢語(yǔ)難？

It doesn’t translate well. The grammar is very different from Romantic languages.

歐美國(guó)家的語(yǔ)言一般都是Latin拉丁語(yǔ)系，因此，歐美人學(xué)Spanish、 French、 Italian都是比較簡(jiǎn)單的，一般聽(tīng)一聽(tīng)大約就能understand。

但是漢語(yǔ)卻是totally different！

It is easily one of the hardest languages in the world.

漢語(yǔ)被公認(rèn)為是世界上最難得語(yǔ)言之一。

English is great easily to pick up.

但英語(yǔ)卻比較好上手, because of movies.

Hollywood has made English accessible and spread the culture all over the world.

“啞巴英語(yǔ)”、“啞巴漢語(yǔ)”怎么說(shuō)呢？

外國(guó)人喜歡用bottleneck（瓶頸）來(lái)形容聽(tīng)懂的多而能說(shuō)的少。

2. Where is Chinese difficult? 漢語(yǔ)究竟難在哪里呢？

第一難：聲調(diào) the 5 tones

在英語(yǔ)中，tones emphasis on different words，在不同的單詞上重讀可能會(huì)引起意思的不同。

在漢語(yǔ)中，tones are unlike anything in Western languages,在每一個(gè)character（字）上重讀的意思都不一樣。

漢語(yǔ)的五種聲調(diào)：

First/ high-level tone 陰平（一聲）

Second/ rising tone 陽(yáng)平（二聲）

Third/ low/ low-falling-raising tone 上聲(三聲)

Fourth/ falling tone 去聲（四聲）

Neutral/ Fifth/ zeroth tone 輕聲

Neutral tone is sometimes thought of incorrectly as a lack of tone.

eg： I feel sick. 我感覺(jué)不舒服。

That was sick! 太惡心了！

對(duì)Win來(lái)說(shuō)，low tone（三聲）和falling tone（四聲）They are so close! 太像了！

Characters are exceptionally difficult to study and memorize. 漢字本身就格外的難學(xué)習(xí)和記住。

第二難：文化背景 cultural context

A meme: Fang bian (方便)

① Are you convenient tonight? 你今晚方便嗎？

Fang bian: Are you available to meet? 有時(shí)間嗎？

②I need to go to the bathroom. 我需要去方便一下。

Fang bian: use the bathroom 上廁所

③If he have enough money? 你方便付錢嗎？

Fang bian: Do you have enough money? 你的錢夠嗎？

④Then they eat ‘fang bian mian’. 他們回家后又吃了方便面。

Fang bian: convenient food 速食品

這么多的“方便”讓外國(guó)人很confused，也很頭疼。
