英語(yǔ)早間課堂:Give it to me straight.
Last time we learned a classical sentence"Spit it out."which is used to ask somebody to tell you all hidden in his heart. This morning I would like to share a new expression with you which expresses a person is asked to be told something he doesn't like to hear. What's it? Let's get the answer from the following dialogue.
A : I've some bad news for you. B : Give it to me straight. I can take it.

It is "Give it to me straight." Straight 是直接的意思，the most pure translation of it is: 坦率地告訴我，跟我說(shuō)實(shí)話吧。Straight 還有立刻的意思，the most pure translation of it is: 開門見山地說(shuō)There's an idiom which is similar to it. It is "straight from the shoulder" . If you say something straight from the shoulder, you are very being hones, even if what you are saying is critical. So , "I will give it to you straight from the shoulder.'意思就是：我要跟你說(shuō)句實(shí)話。

As for"straight", we have many idioms. Such as: go straight, play it straight, straight away, straight out/of, straight up.
"Go straight" means "to stop being a criminal and live a honest life". 使我們中文中所說(shuō)的“改邪歸正，重新做人”的意思。He went straight and we shouldn't speak 0f what he'd done before. 他已經(jīng)改邪歸正了，我們不應(yīng)該在提及他做的那些犯罪的事情。
"Play it straight"means "to be honest and not to trick somebody". 意思是：誠(chéng)實(shí)無(wú)欺，公平正直。I realized those who play it straight in politics cannot be in power for a long time. 我發(fā)覺(jué)那些在政壇上正直的人當(dāng)權(quán)不久。確實(shí)生活中也是，為人有一門學(xué)問(wèn)，真想混的風(fēng)風(fēng)光光的，還真得學(xué)《厚黑學(xué)》。
"Straight of " means "without hesitating". 意思是：毫不猶豫地，直率地。She asked him straight off what he though about. 她直率地問(wèn)他對(duì)這一切有什么看法。
"Straight up" is used to ask if what somebody has said is true or emphasize that what you've said is true. 它用于詢問(wèn)或者是強(qiáng)調(diào)事情的真實(shí)性，翻譯為：的確，真的。I saw it- straight up. 我親眼看見了，真的。Tell me straight up. 跟我說(shuō)實(shí)話。
