"Now," said Squeers, giving the desk a great rap with his cane,

“喂，”斯格威爾用拐杖重重地敲擊一下桌子，

which made half the little boys nearly jump out of their boots, “is that physicking over?”

多半孩子剎那間三魂嚇掉個(gè)兩魂半，“治療結(jié)束了嗎？”

"Just over," said Mrs. Squeers, choking the last boy in her hurry,

“剛完。”斯格威爾夫人答道，她手腳慌忙地塞藥，竟然讓最后一個(gè)男孩噎住半晌，

and tapping the crown of his head with the wooden spoon to restore him.

隨后她猛地用木勺敲打孩子頂部，讓他得以緩過(guò)氣來(lái)，

Here, you Smike: "take away now. Look sharp!"

一邊說(shuō)，“好了，史邁克，趕快走，長(zhǎng)點(diǎn)眼！”

Smike shuffled out with the basin, and Mrs. Squeers hurried out after him into a species of washhouse,

史邁克笨拙地端著盆走開(kāi)了，斯格威爾夫人匆忙跟在他的身后,兩人走進(jìn)一間好像洗衣房的地方，

where there was a small fire, and a large kettle, together with a number of little wooden bowls which were arranged upon a board.

房間爐灶上火苗很小，垛著個(gè)大水壺，旁邊木板上擺放幾只小木碗。

Into these bowls Mrs. Squeers, assisted by the hungry servant,

在一位饑腸咕嚕的傭人幫忙張羅下，

poured a brown composition which looked like diluted pincushions without the covers, and was called porridge.

斯格威爾夫人將一盆無(wú)蓋、類(lèi)似粥的褐色混合黏狀物分別倒進(jìn)木碗內(nèi)，

A minute wedge of brown bread was inserted in each bowl, and when they had eaten their porridge by means of the bread,

然后逐一添加小撮面包。孩子們就這樣吃完面包，喝光粥，早餐轉(zhuǎn)眼草草結(jié)束；

the boys ate the bread itself, and had finished their breakfast, whereupon Mr. Squeers went away to his own.

之后，斯格威爾先生走開(kāi)，獨(dú)自享用他的早餐去了。

After some half-hour's delay Mr. Squeers reappeared,

約莫半個(gè)時(shí)辰，斯格威爾先生回來(lái)了，

and the boys took their places and their books, of which latter commodity the average might be about one to eight learners.

男孩們走到各自座位，拿出書(shū)本，大約八個(gè)孩子才能有一本書(shū)。
