Susan pondered carefully and seriously on what her mother had said.
蘇珊仔細而認真地思考著媽媽說的話。
When she thought over her past conduct, a blush of shame crept to her cheeks,
當想到自己過去的表現(xiàn)時，她的小臉因為慚愧而變得緋紅，
and a look of sorrow into her eyes, as many little acts of selfishness and unkindness came back to her memory.
眼里滿是懊悔的神情，因為她想起了過去做過的許多自私和刻薄的事。
She resolved that for the future, both in great things and small, she would remember and follow the Golden Rule.
她下定決心，今后無論在大事還是小事上，都會記住并遵守“黃金法則”。
It was not long after this that an opportunity occurred of trying Susan's principles.
這之后沒多久，一個考驗蘇珊的機會來了。
One Saturday evening when she went, as usual, to farmer Thompson's inn,
一個周六的晚上，她像往常一樣去了農(nóng)民湯姆森的旅店，
to receive the price of her mother's washing for the boarders,

which amounted to five dollars, she found the farmer in the stable yard.

He was apparently in a terrible rage with some horse dealers with whom he had been bargaining.

He held in his hand an open pocketbook, full of bills; and scarcely noticing the child as she made her request,

except to swear at her, as usual, for troubling him when he was busy, he handed her a bank note.

Glad to escape so easily, Susan hurried out of the gate, and then, pausing to pin the money safely in the folds of her shawl,
蘇珊很高興這么快就可以離開了，所以快速地跑出了門。隨后她停下腳步，準備將錢牢牢地釘在披肩的疊層里。
she discovered that he had given her two bills instead of one.
忽然，她發(fā)現(xiàn)農(nóng)民給的鈔票是兩張，而不是一張。
She looked around; nobody was near to share her discovery; and her first impulse was joy at the unexpected prize.
她向四周看了看，附近沒有人看到她的發(fā)現(xiàn)，而她的第一反應(yīng)是對這個意料之外的獎金高興不已。
