“cock”和“bull”分別指的是“雞”和“牛”，這個(gè)短語最初起源于十七世紀(jì)的童話故事，故事中的雞和牛都擁有語言交談的能力，顯然非常不切實(shí)際，因此“a cock and bull story”也引申出了“無稽之談；一個(gè)荒誕的故事”的意思。
