First Sunday is a new comedy directed and written by David E. Talbert, a first-time filmmaker who's had a lot of success with plays, and this movie, kind of plays a little bit like a play. It seems perhaps like it would have been more comfortable on the stage than on the screen, but it has its good points.
Ice Cube is the star. He plays Durrell, a man in Baltimore who has to come up with 17,000 dollars or else his child and his child's mother will move out of town.
Durrell's best friend is Lee John played by Tracy Morgan and he's the usual comic sidekick to Ice Cube. Ice Cube does best in comedies when he has a comic sidekick ‘cause he doesn't show a lot of great humor or enthusiasm himself.
But the person who really steals the show is Katt Williams playing Rickey, choir director at the church that Lee John and Durrell decide to rob.
What kind of people would rob a church? That question gets asked again and again, the whole middle third of First Sunday consists of people asking the two robbers what are you doing robbing a church?
But they need the money and the comedy needs a hook. There needs to be some misunderstandings, some shenanigans.
Robbing a Church is one way to get inside a church and church is where these guys are supposed to end up.
You can see the aim mic coming from a mile away. This is gonna be a warm slightlysentimental movie about redemption, the bad guys see the error of their ways, the nice people of the church take them in and life goes on.
Your life will certainly go on if you skip this movie but if you are in the mood for something easy, soft, sweet with some funny moments then you could do worse than to check out First Sunday.
