“說(shuō)起來(lái)，諸位先生，掃甲板，在海上可是一件日常工作，除了刮大風(fēng)，本來(lái)每天晚上都要這樣做。據(jù)說(shuō)甚至在船只實(shí)際上已快要下沉的時(shí)候也要這樣做。這個(gè)呀，諸位先生，就是海上的不變的習(xí)俗，也是水手們天生愛(ài)好整潔的習(xí)慣；其中有些人如果不先洗臉是不會(huì)心甘情愿地讓溺死的。不過(guò)，這種打掃的差使，在所有的船只中，如果船上有小廝的話(huà)，向來(lái)都是小廝們的份內(nèi)事。
