Next morning early, leaving Queequeg shut up withYojo in our little bedroom--for it seemed that it wassome sort of Lent or Ramadan, or day of fasting,humiliation, and prayer with Queequeg and Yojothat day; how it was I never could find out, for,though I applied myself to it several times, I nevercould master his liturgies and XXXIX Articles--leaving Queequeg, then, fasting on his tomahawkpipe, and Yojo warming himself at his sacrificial fireof shavings, I sallied out among the shipping. Aftermuch prolonged sauntering, and many randominquiries, I learnt that there were three ships up for three-years' voyages--The Devil-Dam theTit-bit, and the Pequod. Devil-dam, I do not know the origin of; Tit-bit is obvious; Pequod youwill no doubt remember, was the name of a celebrated tribe of Massachusetts Indians; nowextinct as the ancient Medes. I peered and pryed about the Devil-Dam; from her, hopped overto the Tit-bit; and finally, going on board the Pequod, looked around her for a moment, andthen decided that this was the very ship for us.

第二天一早,我讓魁魁格跟約約一起關(guān)在我們那個(gè)小房間里...因?yàn)槟且惶?好象是魁魁格和約約要過(guò)一種四旬齋,九月齋,或者是斷食日,禁欲日,禱告日之類的日子,這究竟是怎么回事,我可始終弄不明白,因?yàn)殡m然我自己也曾專心刻意研究過(guò)好幾回,可始終精通不了他那禱告文式和三十九條教規(guī)...于是我聽任魁魁格咬著他那煙斗斧,約約則在魁魁格的刨花的祭火里取暖,辭別了他們,便到碼頭去。經(jīng)過(guò)一再的逛來(lái)逛去和多次的隨便問(wèn)訊后,我得知有三條航期三年的船。。。。。。"魔閘號(hào)"。"珍饈號(hào)"和"裴廓德號(hào)"。"魔閘",我不知它的出典;"珍饈"卻是一目了然的,至于"裴廓德",那卻準(zhǔn)是記得起來(lái)的,它是馬薩諸塞州印第安人的一個(gè)有名的種族,如今已和古代的米太人一樣的絕種了。我一再窺探過(guò)了"魔閘號(hào)"后,就跳上"珍饈號(hào)";最后才走上"裴廓德號(hào)",對(duì)它回顧了一會(huì)后,就肯定這正是我們要趕的船。

You may have seen many a quaint craft in your day, for aught I know;-square-toed luggers;mountainous Japanese junks; butter-box galliots, and what not; but take my word for it, younever saw such a rare old craft as this same rare old Pequod.

在你們那時(shí)候,你們也許看到過(guò)許多古雅的船只也未可知...什么方頭的橫帆船呀;巨大的日本舢舨呀;黃油箱似的帆槳兩用的小船呀等等;但是,請(qǐng)相信我,你們一定從來(lái)沒(méi)有看到象"裴廓德號(hào)"這樣曠古罕見的老船。
