精靈鼠小弟 第37期:鼠小弟遇上的最糟的事情

Still hanging on to his skates, Stuart tried to make his way up to the surface of the garbage, but the footing was bad.

身上帶著冰鞋的斯圖亞特，想爬到垃圾的頂上去，可是腳卻不好使了。

He climbed a pile of coffee grounds, but near the top the grounds gave way under him and he slid down and landed in a pool of left over rice pudding.

他往一個(gè)咖啡堆上爬，可剛爬上去，就滑了下來，陷到一堆吃剩的布丁里。

"I bet I'm going to be sick at my stomach before I get out of this," said Stuart.

“我敢說在我離開這里之前，我就會(huì)得胃病的，”斯圖亞特說。

He was anxious to work his way up to the top of the pile because he was afraid of beingsquashed by the next can-load of garbage.

他焦急地往垃圾堆上面爬，因?yàn)樗卤涣硪幌淅鴫喊T。

When at last he did succeed in getting to the surface, tired and smelly, he observed that the truck was not making any more collections but was rumbling rapidly along.

當(dāng)他終于成功地爬到垃圾的表面，帶著臭味兒和疲憊，往外觀察時(shí)，才知道車上沒再裝垃圾，只是在飛快地往前開。

Stuart glanced up at the sun.

斯圖亞特看看太陽。

"We're going east," he said to himself.

“我們?cè)谕鶘|邊去，”他自語。

I wonder what that means.

我真想知道為什么。

There was no way for him to get out of the truck, the sides were too high.

對(duì)他來說，車上無路可逃，四邊都太高了。

He just had to wait.

他決定還是等等再說。

When the truck arrived at the East River, which borders New York City on the eastand which is a rather dirty but useful river,

卡車開到東河，它就在紐約城邊。那里非常的臟亂，不過卻有一條有用的河。

the driver drove out on to the pier, backed up to a garbage scow, and dumped his load.

車開到那里的碼頭，便開始往停在下面的大垃圾船方向倒車，然后才把垃圾卸到那條船上。

Stuart went crashing and slithering along with everything else and hit his head so hard he fainted and lay quite still, as though dead.

斯圖亞特和每一件垃圾一起往下墜時(shí)，被重重地?fù)舻搅祟^部，以至于完全昏迷，就像死了一樣。

He lay that way for almost an hour, and when he recovered his senses he looked about him and saw nothing but water.

他就那樣躺了大約有一小時(shí)，才恢復(fù)了知覺，看著自己和河水。

The scow was being towed out to sea.

那大平底船正在被往大洋的方向拖去。

"Well," thought Stuart, "this is about the worst thing that could happen to anybody.

“唉，”斯圖亞特想，“這大概是一個(gè)人能想出來的最糟的事情了。

I guess this will be my last ride in this world.

我猜這次是我在這個(gè)世界里的最后一次航行了。
