Chapter 21 The Greening Spring

第二十一章 綠色的春天

Louis and Serena were more in love than ever.

路易斯和塞蕾娜比以往更恩愛(ài)了。

When spring came, they flew north,

春天一到，他們便往北飛去了，

Louis wearing his trumpet and his slate and hischalk pencil and his medal, Serena wearing nothingat all.

路易斯在飛翔時(shí)仍然掛著他的小號(hào)，他的石板，他的石筆和他的獎(jiǎng)?wù)拢倌葎t什么都沒(méi)帶。

Now that he no longer had to work and earn, Louis felt a great sense of relief.

現(xiàn)在他不再需要找工作掙錢(qián)了，這使路易斯有了一種如釋重負(fù)的感覺(jué)。

No more would he have to carry a moneybag around his neck.

他的脖子上再也不用掛什么錢(qián)袋了。

The two swans flew high and fast, ten thousand feet above the earth.

這兩只天鵝又高又快地飛在離地面一萬(wàn)英尺的高空。

They arrived at last at the little pond in the wilderness where Louis had been hatched.

他們最后飛到了那個(gè)荒野中的小池塘，路易斯就是在那里被孵出來(lái)的。

This was his dream--to return with his love to the place in Canada where he had first seen thelight of day.

這一直是他的夢(mèng)想--和他的愛(ài)人一起飛到加拿大的那個(gè)他第一次見(jiàn)到光明的地方。

He escorted Serena from one end of the pond to the other and back again.

他護(hù)送著塞蕾娜從池塘的一頭游到另一頭，然后又游回來(lái)。

He showed her the tiny island where his mother's nest had been.

他把他媽媽當(dāng)初的窩所在的那個(gè)小島指給他看。

He showed her the log Sam Beaver had been sitting on when Louis had pulled his shoelacebecause he couldn't say beep.

他指給她看當(dāng)自己因不能說(shuō)“嗶”而只好去拉薩姆的鞋帶時(shí)薩姆曾坐過(guò)的那根大木頭。

Serena was enchanted. They were in love.

塞蕾娜看得都入了迷。他們?cè)谙鄲?ài)。

It was spring. The frog was waking from his long sleep.

現(xiàn)在是春天了。青蛙正在從他的長(zhǎng)睡中醒來(lái)。

The turtle was coming to life again after his nap.

烏龜在經(jīng)過(guò)他的小睡后也開(kāi)始漸漸的蘇醒。

The chipmunk felt the warm air, soft and kind, blow through the trees,

花栗鼠感覺(jué)那輕柔而又慈愛(ài)地拂過(guò)林間的已經(jīng)是溫暖的春風(fēng)了，

just as it did in that springtime when Louis's father and mother had visited the pond to nestand raise their young.

和路易斯的父母在這個(gè)池塘上造窩和哺育他們的小天鵝的那個(gè)春天時(shí)心里的感覺(jué)一樣。

The sun shone down, strong and steady.

濃烈的陽(yáng)光源源不絕地灑落下來(lái)。

Ice was melting; patches of open water appeared on the pond.

冰正在消融;片片開(kāi)闊的水面從池塘里顯露出來(lái)。

Louis and Serena felt the changing world, and they stirred with new life and rapture and hope.

路易斯和塞蕾娜被這個(gè)變化中的世界所觸動(dòng)了，全都萌生了對(duì)新生活的向往，心頭泛起了狂喜和渴望。

There was a smell in the air, a smell of earth waking after its long winter.

空氣中有一種特別的氣息，大地在漫長(zhǎng)的嚴(yán)冬過(guò)后醒來(lái)的氣息。

The trees were putting out tiny green buds, the buds were swelling.

樹(shù)木正在抽出綠芽，綠芽正在漸漸的膨脹。

A better, easier time was at hand. A pair of Mallard Ducks flew in.

一段更美好的，更安閑的時(shí)光已經(jīng)伸手可及了。

A sparrow with a white throat arrived and sang, "Oh, sweet Canada, Canada, Canada!"

一對(duì)綠頭鴨飛了過(guò)來(lái)。一只灰鶯飛過(guò)來(lái)唱：“噢，可愛(ài)的加拿大，加拿大，加拿大!”

Serena chose a muskrat lodge on which to build her nest.

塞蕾娜選了一個(gè)麝鼠洞，在那上面造她的窩。

It was the right height above the water. The muskrats had built it of mud and sticks.

這里離水的高度正好合適。這個(gè)麝鼠當(dāng)初是用濕泥和樹(shù)枝把洞鋪成的。

Louis had hoped his wife might decide to make her nest in the same spot where his mother hadbuilt hers,

路易斯希望他的妻子能把窩建在他媽媽的窩當(dāng)初所在的地方，

but females are full of notions;

可是雌天鵝們卻都有自己的主意;

they want their own way, pretty much, and Serena knew what she was doing.

他們特別愿意按照自己的意愿行事，塞蕾娜當(dāng)然也知道她正在干什么。

Louis was so delighted when he saw her begin to construct the nest, he didn't really carewhere it was.

看到她開(kāi)始造窩了，路易斯感到很高興，他其實(shí)并不在乎窩到底建在哪里。

He raised his horn to his mouth and played the beginning of an old song

他把他的小號(hào)舉到嘴邊，吹起了一首老歌的開(kāi)頭，

called "It's delightful to be married, to be-be-be-be, be-be-be-be married ..."

這首歌的名字叫“結(jié)婚是快樂(lè)的，結(jié)—結(jié)—結(jié)—結(jié)，結(jié)—結(jié)—結(jié)—結(jié) 結(jié)婚……”，

Then he helped by bringing a few pieces of coarse grass.

然后他又幫著銜來(lái)了幾截粗草。
