吹小號的天鵝 第80期:塞蕾娜(3)

Louis was right. Serena, the swan of his desiring, hadbeen caught by the fierce storm and blown all theway across America.

路易斯是對的。塞蕾娜，他思慕的這只天鵝，不幸被猛烈的風(fēng)暴卷住，一直吹到了美國的這個地方。

When she looked down and saw Bird Lake, she endedher flight, almost dead from exhaustion.

當(dāng)她從空中瞥見鳥湖時，已經(jīng)再也沒力氣飛了，差點因力竭而死掉。

Louis was tempted to rush right over.

路易斯忍不住要立刻沖過去。

But then he thought, "No, that would be a mistake.

可他轉(zhuǎn)念又想，“不，那會是一個錯誤的。

She is in no condition at the moment to perceive the depth of my affection and the extent ofmy love.

在這種情況下她覺不出我對她的愛有多深。

She is too pooped. I will wait. I will bide my time. I will give her a chance to recover.

她太累了。我要等等再說。我要靜候良機。我要給她一段恢復(fù)的時間。

Then I will renew our acquaintance and make myself known."

然后我將重建我們的關(guān)系，對她進行自我介紹。”

Louis did not go to his job that night; the weather was too bad.

路易斯那天晚上沒去工作;天氣實在太壞了。

All night, he stayed awake, keeping watch, at a slight distance from his beloved.

整夜，他都在他的愛人附近醒著，守望著。

When morning came, the wind subsided. The skies cleared. The lake grew calm. The storm wasover.

早晨到來時，風(fēng)暴平息了。天空清爽了。湖面恢復(fù)了平靜。風(fēng)暴已經(jīng)過去。

Serena stirred and woke. She was still exhausted, and very mussy.

塞蕾娜動了動，醒了過來。她還是很虛弱，全身羽毛凌亂。

Louis stayed away from her. "I'll just wait," he thought.

路易斯離開了她。“我只有等下去，”他想。

"When in love, one must take risks.

“在戀愛時，你得冒險才行。

But I'm not going to risk everything with a bird who is too tired to see straight. I won't hurry,and I won't worry.

可我不能為一只累得什么都看不清的鳥兒冒什么險呀。我不急，我不著急。

Back home on Upper Red Rock Lake, I was without a voice; she ignored me because I could nottell her of my love.

在上紅石湖是老家那會兒，我是沒有嗓子的;她不理我是因為我不能對她說出我的愛。

Now, thanks to my brave father, I have my trumpet.

現(xiàn)在，多謝我那勇敢的父親，我有了我的小號了。

Through the power of music, I will impress her with the intensity of my desire and thestrength of my devotion.

靠著音樂的力量，我能對她表達出我愛欲的激情和濃烈程度。

She will hear me say ko-hoh. I'll tell her I love her in a language anybody can understand, thelanguage of music.

她將會聽到我說‘吭—嗬’的。我要用音樂語言，一種任何人都能聽懂的語言告訴她我愛她。

She will hear the trumpet of the swan, and she will be mine. At least, I hope she will."

她將聽到天鵝的喇叭，她將是我的。至少，我希望她將如此。”

Usually, if a strange bird appeared on Bird Lake,

通常，如果鳥湖上來了一只陌生的鳥兒，

one of the keepers would report its arrival to the Head Man in Charge of Birds, whose office wasin the Bird House.

其中的一個管理員就會向鳥類管理負責(zé)人匯報，他的辦公室就設(shè)在鳥屋里。

The Head Man would then give the order to have the new bird pinioned--have one of its wingsclipped.

這個負責(zé)人接著就會下令給新來的鳥兒“打尖”——剪掉它的一只翅膀尖。

But today, the keeper who usually tended the waterfowl was sick with the flu and had not cometo work.

可今天，那個平時負責(zé)照看水禽的管理員恰巧得了流感，沒來上班。

Nobody noticed that a new Trumpeter Swan had arrived.

沒有人注意到這里新來了一只號手天鵝。

Serena was being very quiet, anyway--she was not attracting any attention.

而且，塞蕾娜表現(xiàn)得又很安靜——因此她沒有引起任何人的注意。

There were now five Trumpeters on the lake.

現(xiàn)在湖上有五只號手天鵝了。

There were the original three captive swans, Curiosity, Felicity, and Apathy. There was, ofcourse, Louis.

原來這里只有三只被囚禁的天鵝，好奇，快活和冷淡。當(dāng)然還有路易斯

And now there was the new arrival, Serena, still exhausted but beginning to revive.

現(xiàn)在這兒新來了一只天鵝，塞蕾娜，她雖然仍是渾身乏力，可身體卻在漸漸地康復(fù)。
