每天午飯后，營員們都要回他們的帳篷里休息一段時(shí)間。
Some of them read books. Some wrote letters home,telling their parents how bad the food was.
這時(shí)，有些人在讀書。有些人在給家里寫信，告訴他們父母這里的食物有多糟。
Some just lay on their cots and talked.
有些人則只是躺在他們的兒童床上相互交談。
One afternoon during rest period, the boys inApplegate's tent began teasing him about hisname.
在一個(gè)午休時(shí)間里，和阿普爾蓋特住在一個(gè)帳篷里的男孩們開始拿他的名字開玩笑了。
"Applegate Skinner," said one boy.
“阿普爾蓋特·斯金納，”一個(gè)男孩說，
"Where did you get such a crazy name, Applegate?"
“阿普爾蓋特，你從哪兒弄了一個(gè)這么發(fā)瘋的名字?”
"My parents gave it to me," replied Applegate.
“我父母給我起的。”阿普爾蓋特回答。
"I know what his name is," said another boy.
“我知道他的名字是什么意思了，”另一個(gè)男孩說，
"Sour Applegate. Sour Applegate Skinner."
“酸蘋果蓋特。酸蘋果蓋特·斯金納。”
The boys howled at this and began chanting, "Sour Applegate, Sour Applegate, SourApplegate."
男孩子們聽到這里都大叫起來，唱歌似的重復(fù)道：“酸蘋果蓋特，酸蘋果蓋特，酸蘋果蓋特。”
"Quiet!" bellowed the tent leader.
“安靜!”帳篷長吼道。
"I don't think it's funny," said Applegate.
“我覺得這一點(diǎn)兒也不好玩。”阿普爾蓋特說
"His name isn't Sour Applegate," whispered another boy. "His name is Wormy Applegate.
“他的名字不叫酸蘋果蓋特，”另一個(gè)男孩低語，“他的名字叫生蟲子的蘋果蓋特。
Wormy Applegate Skinner."
生蟲子的蘋果--蓋特·斯金納。”
This suggestion was greeted with screams of laughter.
孩子們用尖聲大笑來歡迎這個(gè)暗示。
"Quiet!" bellowed the tent leader.
“安靜!”帳篷長咆哮起來，
"I want quiet in this tent. Leave Applegate alone!"
“我要這帳篷里保持安靜。別去惹阿普爾蓋特!”
"Leave Rotten Applegate alone!" whispered another boy.
“別去惹爛蘋果蓋特!”另一個(gè)男孩低語。
And some of the other boys had to pull their pillows over their heads so their snickering couldn'tbe heard.
有幾個(gè)男孩子把他們的枕頭拉到頭上，以免別人聽到他們的偷笑聲。
Applegate was sore.
阿普爾蓋特很傷心。
When the rest period was over, he wandered down to the dock.
休息時(shí)間過后，他漫無目的地來到了碼頭那里。
He didn't like being made fun of, and he wanted to do something to get even.
他不喜歡被別人取笑，因此他想做些什么來報(bào)復(fù)一下。
Without saying anything to anybody, he slid a canoe into the water

and paddled out into the lake, heading for the opposite shore a mile away.

No one noticed him.

Applegate had no business taking a canoe out alone.

He had not passed his swimming test.
他沒有通過他的游泳測(cè)驗(yàn)。
He had not passed his canoe test.
他也沒有通過他的劃獨(dú)木舟測(cè)驗(yàn)。
He was disobeying a camp rule.
他正在違犯營規(guī)。
When he was a quarter of a mile from shore,
當(dāng)他離岸四分之一英里，
in deep water, the wind grew stronger. The waves got higher.
到了水深的地方時(shí)，風(fēng)越刮越猛了。浪高了起來。
The canoe was hard to manage. Applegate got scared.
獨(dú)木舟難以控制了。阿普爾蓋特害怕了。
