Chapter 11 Camp Kookooskoos

第十一章 庫庫斯庫斯夏令營

Camp Kookooskoos was on a small lake, deep in thewoods of Ontario.

庫庫斯庫斯夏令營座落在安大略森林深處的一個小湖邊。

There were no summer cottages on the lake, nooutboard motors, no roads with cars rushing by.

這里沒有依湖而建的消夏別墅，沒有帶舷外發(fā)動機的汽艇，也沒有供汽車驅(qū)駛的車道。

It was a wilderness lake, just right for boys.

這是一個荒野的湖，最適合男孩們來玩。

Mr. Beaver left Sam and Louis at the end of a dirt road,

比弗先生讓薩姆和路易斯在泥土路的盡頭下了車，

and they finished their journey to camp by canoe.

然后他們又乘上獨木舟，劃到了營地，這才算結(jié)束了他們的旅程。

Sam sat in the stern and paddled, Louis stood in the bow and looked straight ahead.

一路上，薩姆坐在船尾劃槳，路易斯則只是站在船頭注視著前方。

The camp consisted of a big log cabin where everybody ate,

這個營地由一個吃飯用的大木屋，

seven tents where the boys and the counselors slept,

七座供男孩與輔導(dǎo)員們睡覺的帳篷，

a dock out front, and a privy out back.

一個建在前面的船塢，一個蓋在后面的廁所組成。

The woods closed in all around, but there was a bare spot that had been made into a tenniscourt,

這里四周都為森林所環(huán)繞，其中只有一塊被用作網(wǎng)球場的開闊地，

and there were plenty of canoes in which to take trips to other lakes.

還有一個堆放著許多可以獨木舟的地方，這些獨木舟是用來在別的湖上旅行的。

There were about forty boys.

這里大約有四十個男孩。

When Sam's canoe grounded on the sandy beach next to the camp dock,

當(dāng)薩姆的獨木舟停靠到營地碼頭邊的沙灘時，

Louis stepped ashore wearing his slate, his chalk pencil, and his trumpet.

路易斯帶著他的石板，他的石筆，他的小號走上了岸。

About twenty boys rushed down to the landing to see what was going on.

碼頭上跑來大約二十個男孩，都想看看發(fā)生了什么事情。

They could hardly believe their eyes.

眼前的一切讓他們幾乎不能相信他們的眼睛了。

"Hey, look what's here!" one of the boys yelled.

“嘿，看那是什么!”一個男孩叫。

"A bird!" cried another. "Look at the size of him!"

“一只鳥!”另一個說。“瞧他的個頭兒!”

Everybody crowded around Louis, wanting to get a close look at the new camper.

每個人都擠到了路易斯的周圍，想更清楚地瞧瞧這位新營員。

Sam had to push some of the boys back, to keep Louis from getting crushed.

薩姆把幾個男孩推開，不讓路易斯被他們擠著。

"Take it easy, will you?" Sam implored.

“慢點來，好嗎?”薩姆懇求。

That evening after supper, the director of the camp, Mr. Brickle,

那天晚飯后，夏令營指導(dǎo)員布里克先生

built a big campfire in front of the main lodge.

在大木屋前生起了營火。

The boys gathered around.

男孩們都圍聚在一起。

They sang songs and toasted marshmallows and swatted mosquitoes.

他們唱著歌，嚼著果汁軟糖，還猛拍蚊子。

Sometimes you couldn't understand the words of a song

有時，你根本聽不清歌里唱的是什么，

because the boys sang with marshmallows in their mouths.

因為男孩們在唱歌時嘴里還塞著果汁軟糖呢。

Louis did not join the group. He stood by himself at a little distance.

路易斯沒和他們在一起 .他獨自站在一個離他們稍遠(yuǎn)的地方。
