"But why did they want to hurt you, Linda?'' heasked that night.

“可她們?yōu)槭裁匆獋δ悖真?”那天晚上他問(wèn)道。

He was crying, because the red marks of the whip onhis back still hurt so terribly. But he was also cryingbecause people were so beastly and unfair, andbecause he was only a little boy and couldn't doanything against them.

他哭著，因?yàn)樽约罕成夏切┘t色的鞭痕還痛得厲害;也因?yàn)槿藗兲靶U，太不公平;也因?yàn)樗约菏莻€(gè)孩子，無(wú)法反抗。

Linda was crying too. She was grown up, but she wasn't big enough to fight against three ofthem.

琳妲也在哭。她倒是成年人，可她只有一個(gè)人，打不過(guò)她們?nèi)齻€(gè)。

It wasn't fair for her either. "Why did they want to hurt you, Linda?"

那對(duì)她也不公平。“她們?yōu)槭裁匆圬?fù)你，琳妲?”

I don't know. How should I know?

我不知道，我怎么會(huì)知道?

It was difficult to hear what she said, because she was lying on her stomach and her face was inthe pillow.

她的話聽(tīng)不清，因?yàn)樗吭诖采希樎裨谡眍^里。

"They say those men are their men," she went on; and she did not seem to be talking to him atall; she seemed to be talking with some one inside herself.

“她們說(shuō)那些男人是她們的，”她說(shuō)下去，好像根本不是在對(duì)他講話;而是在跟她內(nèi)心的什么人講話。

A long talk which she didn't understand; and in the end she started crying louder than ever.

她的話很長(zhǎng)，他聽(tīng)不懂;最后她開(kāi)始哭了，哭聲比任何時(shí)候都大。

Oh, don't cry, Linda. Don't cry.

啊，別哭，琳妲，別哭。

He pressed himself against her. He put his arm round her neck. Linda cried out. "Oh, be careful.My shoulder! Oh!" and she pushed him away, hard.

他靠過(guò)去，靠得緊緊的，伸手摟住她的脖子。琳姐叫了起來(lái)，“哦，別碰，我的肩膀!哦!”她使勁推開(kāi)了他。

His head banged against the wall. "Little idiot!" she shouted; and then, suddenly, she began toslap him. Slap, slap …

他的腦袋撞在了墻上。“小白癡!”她叫道;然后她開(kāi)始打他耳光。叭!叭!……

"Linda," he cried out. "Oh, mother, don't!"

“琳妲，”他叫了出來(lái)，“哦，媽媽。別打了!”

I'm not your mother. I won't be your mother.

我不是你媽媽。我不要做你媽媽。

"But, Linda … Oh!" She slapped him on the cheek.

“可是琳妲……哦!”她又給了他一耳光。

"Turned into a savage," she shouted. "Having young ones like an animal …"

“變成了野蠻人，”她大叫。"像野獸一樣下崽……"

If it hadn't been for you, I might have gone to the Inspector, I might have got away.

要不是因?yàn)槟阄揖涂赡苋フ姨介L(zhǎng)，就有可能走掉。

But not with a baby. That would have been too shameful.

可帶著孩子是不行的。那太丟臉。

He saw that she was going to hit him again, and lifted his arm to guard his face.

他見(jiàn)她又要打他，舉起手臂想遮住臉。

Oh, don't, Linda, please don't.

哦，琳妲，別打，求你別打。

"Little beast!" She pulled down his arm; his face was uncovered.

“小野獸!”她拉下了他的胳臂，臉露了出來(lái)。

"Don't, Linda." He shut his eyes, expecting the blow.

“別打了，琳妲。”他閉上眼睛，等著挨打。

But she didn't hit him. After a little time, he opened his eyes again and saw that she waslooking at him.

可是她沒(méi)有打。過(guò)了一會(huì)兒他睜開(kāi)了眼睛，看見(jiàn)她正望著他。

He tried to smile at her. Suddenly she put her arms round him and kissed him again and again.

他勉強(qiáng)對(duì)她笑了笑。她突然雙手摟住了他，親他，親了又親。

Sometimes, for several days, Linda didn't get up at all. She lay in bed and was sad.

有時(shí)琳妲幾天不起床，躺在床上傷心。

Or else she drank the stuff that Popé brought and laughed a great deal and went to sleep.

或者又喝波培帶來(lái)的東西，然后就老笑，又睡覺(jué)。

Sometimes she was sick. Often she forgot to wash him, and there was nothing to eat exceptcold tortillas.

有時(shí)她生病了，常常忘記給他洗臉洗澡，他除了冷玉米攤餅沒(méi)有別的東西哈。

He remembered the first time she found those little animals in his hair, how she screamed andscreamed.

他記得她第一次在他的頭發(fā)里發(fā)現(xiàn)那些小動(dòng)物時(shí)，大驚小怪地叫個(gè)沒(méi)有完。

The happiest times were when she told him ahout the Other Place.

他們最快活的時(shí)候是在她向他講述那個(gè)地方時(shí)。

And you really can go flying, whenever you like?
