I'm Sherrie Gahn and I'm the principal of Whitney Elementary School

我是Sherrie Gahn 我是惠特尼小學(xué)的校長

Whitney is very unique because we service very high needs population

惠特尼是個特別的學(xué)校 我們?yōu)樘貏e需要幫助的人們服務(wù)

we had a lot of homeless children here，more than 85% of our students are famished reduce lunch and a lot of the 85% are homeless

我們學(xué)校有很多無家可歸的孩子 85%的孩子們不吃晚飯挨著餓 在這85%里許多孩子還無家可歸

when they leave here on the daily basis，sometimes we don't know where they are going

當(dāng)他們學(xué)完功課離開學(xué)校后 有時候我們也不知道他們會去哪里

their environment changes everyday，somedays they may live in their apartment，somedays they like in a hotel motel

他們的生活環(huán)境每天都在變 有時他們住在出租屋 有時住旅館

somedays they may be in the streets，we don't know where they're gonna go

有時候可能流落街頭 我們不知道他們能去哪

when I first came to Whitney and I was in the lunch room walking around helping the kids

當(dāng)我剛來到惠特尼時 一天我在餐廳幫忙

and they kept pocketing their ketchup，putting their ketchup，when I asked my staff what were they doing

看到孩子們在收集番茄醬 把自己那份裝進(jìn)口袋里 我問我的員工他們?yōu)槭裁催@么做

they told me that they do that often because they needed do it.it's gonna be their dinner it's ketchup soup

they're gonna go home and make ketchup soup with it，because there ain't no food

my goal was if I can take that off their plan,if I can make them come to school and feel safe and warm and they have clothes

我的目標(biāo)是想幫他們結(jié)束這樣的生活 如果可以 我希望他們能上學(xué) 有衣服穿 并且感到溫暖 有安全感

just like any other child and they are under same level playing field as any other child in school,then they can learn

就像其他同等條件 學(xué)校里同齡的孩子們一樣 那他們就可以安心學(xué)習(xí)了

I guess it's sort of like that fairy tale that you go to school you get new backpack you get new clothes

我想那有點像童話故事 你上學(xué)了還可以有新書包 新衣服
