39課 Am I all right?

While John Gilbert was in hospital, he asked hisdoctor to tell him whether his operation hadbeensuccessful,but the doctor refused to do so. Thefollowing day, the patient asked for a bedsidetelephone. When hewas alone, he telephoned thehospital exchange and asked for Doctor Millington.When the doctor answered the phone, Mr Gilbertsaid he was inquiring about a certain patient, a MrJohn Gilbert. He asked if Mr Gilbert's operation hadbeen successful and the doctor told him thatit hadbeen. He then asked when Mr Gilbert would be allowed to go home and the doctor told him thathe would have to stay in hospital for another two weeks. Then Dr Millington asked the callerif he was a relative of the patient.' No,' the patient answered,' Iam Mr John Gilbert.

之后，米靈頓醫(yī)生問(wèn)打電話的人是否是病人的親屬。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn) relative常作形容詞用，意為“相對(duì)的”，這里作名詞，意為“親戚”。

8.‘No’, the patient answered, ‘I am Mr. John Gilbert.’

“不是”伯特說(shuō)，“我就是約翰·吉爾伯特先生。”

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn) 直接引語(yǔ)的表達(dá)法：句子兩頭用引號(hào)引人直接說(shuō)的話，中間用“主語(yǔ)加謂語(yǔ)”表示“某人說(shuō)”。
