[00:-2.00]MY FAVOURITE SPORT SKIING
[00:-3.00]Skiing is my favourite sport,
[00:-4.00]even though I have only skied for four days in my whole life!
[00:-5.00]Last year my father promised that if my brother did well in his exams,
[00:-6.00]he would take us for a special holiday.
[00:-7.00]When Victor got straight 'A's,
[00:-8.00]Dad said,'How about a weekend visit to the Botanical Gardens?'
[00:-9.00]But my mother said,'No,you promised a special holiday.
[00:10.00]I think you ought to keep your word.'
[00:11.00]And,despite the expense,he did.
[00:12.00]Victor's dream was to see some real snow.
[00:13.00]So in the Christmas vacation we flew to Seoul,
[00:14.00]and then took a shuttle bus to Muju Resort.
[00:15.00]As it climbed through the mountains,we saw the snow on the trees.
[00:16.00]I was dying to get out and play with it!
[00:17.00]At last we reached the resort, and scrambled out of the bus quickly.
[00:18.00]No one in my family had ever touched snow before.
[00:19.00]We were all like little children:
[00:20.00]we picked up,made snowballs, and threw them at each other!
[00:21.00]Then we noticed that the tour guide was watching us,with a smile on his face.
[00:22.00]'I think we should go and check in at the hotel now,'
[00:23.00]my dad said, and so we did.
[00:24.00]Our room overlooked one of the ski slopes.
[00:25.00]The slopes were floodlit, and we watched people skiing until 10 p.m.
[00:26.00]We could not wait to try it ourselves.
[00:27.00]The next day we had our first skiing lesson.
[00:28.00]We rented our ski suits, boots and skis, and then went outside onto the snow.
[00:29.00]Wearing skis for the first time makes you feel very strange.
[00:30.00]Suddenly you find you can't even walk.
[00:31.00]Our instructor took us onto a gentle slope, and showed us some basic skills.
[00:32.00]If you want to go up a hill,
[00:33.00]you have to stand sideways, and go up step by step.
[00:34.00]If you want to stop, you must point the tips of your skis together.
[00:35.00]But the tips mustn't cross,or you will fall.
[00:36.00]To be honest, that first lesson was not a great success,
[00:37.00]and I spent a lot of time sitting down!
[00:38.00]However,the next day I definitely improved.
[00:39.00]I only fell over a few times, and I managed to do a few longer runs.
[00:40.00]I felt so pleased with myself, and the instructor congratulated me,
[00:41.00]so I felt great.
[00:42.00]Although it was very cold,I spent most of that holiday skiing.
[00:43.00]It was the most wonderful time of my life.
[00:44.00]But it was all over too soon.
[00:45.00]I have decided to do a part time job this summer,
[00:46.00]and perhaps I can earn enough money for another super skiing holiday.
[00:47.00]LISTENING SKILLS Page 7
[00:48.00]Understanding numbers
[00:49.00]Listen to the speakers on the recording.
[00:50.00]Extract the numbers which are needed to complete these tables.
[00:51.00]1.The school table tennis competition was again kingly contested,
[00:52.00]with over fifty entries.
[00:53.00]In the semifinals,Alex beat John in a close match,
[00:54.00]winning in two sets by the score of 21:18 and 21:19.
[00:55.00]In the other Semifinal
[00:56.00]Mark recorded a much easier victory defeating Raymond 21:3,and 21:8.
[00:57.00]Mark went on to take the boys title,
[00:58.00]beating Alex in the best of three sets
[00:59.00]He lost the first set 18:21,
[-1:00.00]but fought back to take the next two sets 21:13 and 21:11.
[-1:-1.00]2.This table shows some of the developments of the Olympic Games.
[-1:-2.00]The first of the modern games was hold in Athens in 1896.
[-1:-3.00]Just thirteen countries took part,
[-1:-4.00]and there were only nine sports.
[-1:-5.00]Although there were three hundred and eleven male competitors,
[-1:-6.00]there were no women at all.
[-1:-7.00]At the Los Angeles's Games of 1932,
[-1:-8.00]thirty-seven countries competed in fifteen different sports.
[-1:-9.00]There were 1,281 male athletes,but just 127 women.
[-1:10.00]In Helsinki in 1952 the number of countries had risen to 69,
[-1:11.00]but there were only seventeen sports.
[-1:12.00]Although the number women athletes had climbed to 518,
[-1:13.00]they were still after numbered by the male competitors, the numbered 4,407.
[-1:14.00]Even in the Barcelona Olympics of 1992,
[-1:15.00]in which 168 countries competed in 26 different sports,
[-1:16.00]the number of male and female athletes was not nearly equal,
[-1:17.00]there were 6,658 men,
[-1:18.00]but less than half as many women, who numbered 2,708.
[-1:19.00]3.A:I'm just writing a notice about the Club's Table Tennis Tournament.
[-1:20.00]Let's see,I reckon down the events, the cost is forty-five yuan per entry.
[-1:21.00]What else do I need to put on it?
[-1:22.00]B:What's the deadline for entries?
[-1:23.00]A:Oh,that's the 7th of May.We must type all the entries by then.
[-1:24.00]The matches up to the finals will be played between the 14th of May
[-1:25.00]and the 30th of June.
[-1:26.00]B:What about the finals?
[-1:27.00]A:They'll be played on the 6th of July.
[-1:28.00]Shall I put the schedule down?
[-1:29.00]B:Yes,you should.
[-1:30.00]A:Right.Well,the Women's final will start at about one forty-five.
[-1:31.00]and the Men's final will start about two thirty.
[-1:32.00]We put that one last because it can take a long time.
[-1:33.00]We'll have the boys' and girls' finals earlier,
[-1:34.00]at 12:00 noon and one o'clock respectively.
[-1:35.00]There,it's that all?
[-1:36.00]B:That's good!
[-1:37.00]But I suggest you give a full number in case anyone has inquiries
[-1:38.00]A:That's a good idea!
[-1:39.00]They can phone Maggie Zhu in the office, what's her number?
[-1:40.00]B:It's 28862311.
[-1:41.00]4.A:Hello,John.How did you get on in the athletic meeting, yesterday?
[-1:42.00]B:Very well,thank you.
[-1:43.00]A:Don't be shy.Tell me all about your results.
[-1:44.00]B:Well,I was first in the 100m,I ran my best time ever 13.89 seconds.
[-1:45.00]And I was third in the 200m with a time of 27.37 seconds.
[-1:46.00]I didn't do so well in the 400m though.
[-1:47.00]I came sixth in one minute three point zero eight seconds
[-1:48.00]A:That's really good!Did you take part in any of the field events?
[-1:49.00]B:Yes,I won the long jump, with a jump of four point one five metres.
[-1:50.00]and I was sixth in the high jump,I only jumped 1.42 metres,
[-1:51.00]that was my worst result.
[-1:52.00]A:Congratulations!I think you did really well.

[-1:55.00]When you have to read a dialogue,
[-1:56.00]you must read contracted forms as contracted forms.

[-2:16.00]She said she'd play in the game today.
[-2:17.00]SUSAN:No,she told me that she wouldn't play.
[-2:18.00]In fact,she said she couldn't play,because she's injured.

[-2:25.00]Faster,higher,stronger
[-2:26.00]At the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games,
[-2:27.00]the number of participant that completed for medals in athletics alone reached 2000.
[-2:28.00]This was the largest number ever reordered in Olympic history.
[-2:29.00]Athletics usually refers to sports in four areas:
[-2:30.00]track,field,road and combined events.
[-2:31.00]There are lots of track events at the Olympics.
[-2:32.00]They include sprints,middle-distance
[-2:33.00]and long-distance running,hurdling,relays,etc.
[-2:34.00]Field events, however, are often not so closely linked with speed.
[-2:35.00]They occlude long jump triple jump, high jump people,
[-2:36.00]pole vault,short-put,discus and javelin,to name just a few.
[-2:37.00]The marathons and race walks belong to road events,
[-2:38.00]which often test the limits of people's endurance.
[-2:39.00]In the combined events
[-2:40.00]the athletes are required to complete in a series of track and field events.
[-2:41.00]The points are based on their performance in each event,
[-2:42.00]and the person with the most points wins.
[-2:43.00]Athletics is,in many ways, the best embodiment of the Olympic motto
[-2:44.00]'Faster,higher, stronger'.
[-2:45.00]The many wonders and achievements in athletics always inspire people
[-2:46.00]to pursue the true spirit of sportsmanship.
