The leaders of the Pacific Islands, including the New Zealand Prime Minister, John Key, are meeting in Papua New Guinea. Once again, the military leader of Fiji, Commodore Bainimarama, has not attended. At the last Pacific Islands Forum, (see August 21st 2008) the leaders warned Bainimarama to hold elections by March 2009. Today, the leaders have given him until May this year to announce a date for elections and the elections must be held before the end of the year. They said that two years of rule by a military government was not acceptable. If Bainimarama does not hold elections, the leaders plan to suspend him from the Pacific Islands Forum. Fiji will possibly be out of the Commonwealth also.
