Welcome to Spotlight’s Listener Mail program! I’m Liz Waid.
Voice 2
And I’m Joshua Leo. Spotlight uses a special English method of broadcasting. It is easier for people to understand, no matter where in the world they live.
Voice 1
Today’s Spotlight is on you! On today’s listener mail program we hear about a love story, a different method for washing your hands, and choosing to be poor. Join us as we hear comments from people all around the world.
Voice 2
Our first comments today come from one of our most popular Spotlight programs ever! This program was called “Crazy English”. In this program we told about Li Yang. He is from China. And he has invented a strange, or crazy, way for people to practice English - they shout it! Many people left comments on the script page of this program. They described how they found success with this method. Vanes1717 had even heard similar advice before. She writes:
Voice 3
“Once an English teacher said to me ‘Try reading out loud to yourself. This will help you to practice saying English words. Then your pronunciation will improve - you will say things correctly.’ I am using Li Yang’s Crazy English teaching method, and it works! I think this is a really good method... And I will continue using this method to learn!”
Voice 1
We are really happy that this method has been so helpful for you! Reading out loud is important when learning any language. Li Yang and your teacher have the same ideas! Narath, from Cambodia, also thought this program was interesting. However, she believed the shouting was not a necessary part of learning English. She explained:
Voice 4
“I am sure speaking English in a loud voice will help me to improve my English - but not in a shouting voice. I notice that speaking English in a loud voice and a shouting voice seems different for me. When you shout at someone it means you are angry. Most people have difficulty speaking in a loud voice because they are shy, afraid of making mistakes, or they are afraid of what people will think of them. I am in this situation.”
Voice 2
Narath also describes how she practices her English speaking. She reads the words out loud five times. She looks for new words to learn. And she tries to understand the exact meaning. She says:
Voice 4
“I have just been starting learning like this for a few weeks. I can already see good results.”
Voice 1
Thank you for sharing your experiences with us Narath! It is true that it can be difficult to speak in front of other people. But we are happy to hear that you have found a method of practice that works for you!
Voice 2
Finally, our last comment from this program comes from listener tank. She tells a story about using English to find love! She writes:
Voice 5
“You said in this program that English can help people achieve success in business and even love. It is really so! My friend was in Spain. She did not know Spanish, but she did know English. But she met her love. They spoke only in English. They understood each other clearly. And after some months they were married. It is a true story! So, English is a language of love for people from different countries!”
Voice 2
What a wonderful story! Thank you for sharing this with us!
Voice 1
Our next comments come from the program “Global Soap Project”. In that program we told about an organization that brings soap to people all over the world who need it. The soap helps them to wash their hands and bodies and to avoid disease. This program encouraged many people. Mr. Winthant wrote:
Voice 6
“This is a great project for people who are in crisis. We do not know what happened in the world that so many people face terrible conditions. So I am thankful for this project. After that, the project will try to encourage refugees when they face any problems in the future, I hope.”
Voice 2
Many other listeners agreed that this was a wonderful organization. One listener, Narath, even shared a different way people wash their hands.
Voice 4
“In my country, the people living in far away areas use ashes to wash their hands with water instead of soap. Ashes are able to kill the bacteria.”
Voice 1
This is some interesting information! We found some more information about using ash to wash hands. We found that some studies have discovered that ash can be an effective way to kill bacteria on hands. In areas where there is no soap, people can rub ash on their hands. They must rub the ash strongly all over their hands. Then use lots of clean water to wash the ash off. In this way, people can reduce the amount of bacteria on their hands after using the toilet. Thank you for letting us know about this interesting method for washing hands!
Voice 2
Narath also writes that she hopes people will give money to the Global Soap Project. And she hopes more people will know about it!
Voice 1
Our final comments today come from the program “The Simple Way”. In this program we told about Shane Claiborne. With some friends, Shane set up a group to help the poorest people in the area of Kensington in the city of Philadelphia in the United States. He chooses to be poor and lives among them. Egirl11989 wrote:
Voice 3
“Shane’s idea is very strange. But it has meaning to the poor and homeless in Kensington. Most people want to live and work in good conditions. But I think even if people do not choose to be poor, they can still help others. They can do different activities to help others as long as they are helpful and useful.”
Voice 2
A listener from Kenya thought one part of Shane’s story was emotionally touching and powerful. He wrote:
Voice 7
“If I read the program well, I think it said that the Red Cross came and put up the shelter. But no one came to stay there because the people in that place helped the people with no houses. So, it made a good point for the Simple Way - that sharing and helping works in real and good ways. They did not need the Red Cross because they loved each other. This makes me happy and hopeful for the world.
Voice 2
You are right! Thank you for sharing these beautiful thoughts. This story was encouraging for all people to hear.
Voice 1
