I have a new boss who will not yield an inch. It is “my way or the highway” with her. She’s a classic you know what! (And I’m a woman, so I can say that.) I think she has a problem with other women. How do you suggest dealing with a boss like that?
I’m not sure what you mean. She’s a classic what? I think we all know what you are getting at, but does being a woman give you a free pass to make a disrespectful reference that — if said by a man — would likely get him fired or, at the very least, ostracized? However, to your question, the boss is in charge, and most aren’t winning any boss-of-the-year contests. So, you’ve got two choices. Either have a conversation with your boss privately and see if there is a way to change the dynamic, or if not, either deal with it or leave. But the best remedy for bad boss behavior (three Bs that aren’t offensive) is to refuse to accept it.
I have a two-week vacation planned for the end of August with family and friends. I just got a new boss who is demanding a lot of work that needs to be done by the end of the month. It is more than I can accomplish if I take the time off. What should I do?
Summertime, and the livin’ is supposed to be easy — because life is hard enough, and we need time to recharge. I have no idea what is driving the hard charge during prime vacation months. It could be an over-eager new boss, or it could be any number of legitimate critical issues that need to be resolved. Those emergencies have a way of rearing their ugly heads at the most inconvenient times. Unless we know what is behind the August surge, you won’t know what call to make — so ask. Explain that this is a big family trip that has been on the books for some time and that the only way for you to deliver is if you cancel it or at least cut it in half. Ask if it’s critical enough that they want you to do that. (If so, and there are costs involved, the company should reimburse you.) If you get the conversation started and demonstrate that you’re a professional and that you will be flexible in accommodating the business needs as required, you stand a good chance of a favorable outcome.
