(1)表示許可
You may take everything you like.你喜歡什么就拿什么吧。
You might tell us the truth.你不妨把真相告訴我們。
(2)may或might提出請求時,肯定答語用may,否定答語用mustn’t或can’t。
— May I smoke in your class? 我可以在你班上抽煙嗎?
— Yes,you may.行,你可以抽。
— No,you mustn’t/can’t.不可以。
— You’d better not.你最好不要。
(3)表示推測
I may go,but I really don’t want to.我可能去,但我不真正想去。
It may/might rain this afternoon.今天下午可能會下雨。
She may have been beautiful once,but she is not anymore.
她從前可能漂亮,不過她現(xiàn)在漂亮不再。
【比較】
①He may/might not be there.他可能不在那里。(對現(xiàn)在情況的推測)
②He may/might be waiting for someone.他可能在等人。(對正在進行情況的推測)
③They may/might have seen him.他們可能見到過他。(對過去情況的推測)
(4)用于祈使句中表示祝愿
May you succeed.祝你成功。
May you have a pleasant journey.一路平安。
May we never forget each other.愿我們彼此永不忘。
(5)用于虛擬語氣中
If I might I would try once again·如果我能夠,我會再試一次。
If you had come to the lecture,you might have met him.
如果你去聽報告,你或許會遇見他。
3.may/might構(gòu)成的句式
(1)may/might as well,意為“不妨……”。
Catherine,you may as well come too.凱瑟琳,你不妨也去。
If that’s the case,I may as well try.如果情況如此,我不妨試一試。
(2)might have done,表示“責備”或“忠告”,只用于肯定句中。
You might at least have said hello to me.你至少可以和我打個招呼啊!
You might have let us know beforehand.你可以事先讓我們知道嘛!
