1. Put the clock back
[字面意思]:把鐘表指針向后撥。
[實(shí)際意思] 指行為或觀念跟不上時(shí)代;按陳舊的規(guī)矩辦事;老腦筋。
E.g.: You must give university students more freedom. Don’t try to prevent them from falling in love before graduation. You can’t put the clock back!
原來(lái)這樣簡(jiǎn)單的詞句,也能表達(dá)如此確切的意思!
2. Work against the clock
[字面意思]:與鐘表的走動(dòng)比賽。
[實(shí)際意思] 指的是抓緊時(shí)間工作,強(qiáng)調(diào)不停頓哦~
E.g.: I have to work against the clock to finish my thesis before the holiday finishes. Otherwise my supervisor will not be happy with me.

3. Go like clockwork

[實(shí)際意思] 指計(jì)劃、安排、工程或項(xiàng)目等進(jìn)展順利,強(qiáng)調(diào)有條不紊,沒(méi)有麻煩。它還有另一種說(shuō)法:Run like clockwork.
E.g.: The president is very happy that all our arrangements for the project are going like clockwork. And I am sure we can finish the project in time.
如果part2的話題考到了future plan, something you saved money for這種和計(jì)劃相關(guān)的話題,烤鴨們是可以把go like clockwork運(yùn)用上去的,表達(dá)我們的計(jì)劃按部就班,進(jìn)展的非常順利~
4. After hours
[字面意思]:鐘點(diǎn)之后。
[實(shí)際意思] 在規(guī)定的下班時(shí)間以后,非營(yíng)業(yè)時(shí)間。
E.g.: Public houses must not stay open after hours, for if they do, they will have to face sanctions imposed by the government.
這個(gè)詞其實(shí)在我們平常的生活中非常常見(jiàn),比如After hours GP指的是非營(yíng)業(yè)時(shí)間的GP醫(yī)生~
5. This minute
[字面意思]:這分鐘。
[實(shí)際意思] 馬上,立刻,立即。
E.g.: What a mess you have made! Your room is like a pigsty! I want you to clean your room this minute!
這應(yīng)該是每一個(gè)媽媽都會(huì)說(shuō)的話~ 意思是你立刻把你的房間給我收拾干凈~~~ This minute和right now是一個(gè)意思哦。

[字面意思]:以黑白形式。
[實(shí)際意思] 寫在紙上;以書面形式(常指合同或協(xié)議等法律文件);白紙黑字。

7. Out of the blue
[字面意思]:來(lái)自藍(lán)天;或出自大海。
[實(shí)際意思] 突然;沒(méi)有料到。常跟動(dòng)詞come 連用。
E.g.: The news of his marriage came completely out of the blue. It was only last month that we learnt that he had broken with his girl friend.
在口語(yǔ)考試中,如果能用一個(gè)come out of blue代替unexpectedly或者suddenly是絕對(duì)能讓考官眼前一亮的哦~
8. Come out with flying colors
[字面意思]:出來(lái)時(shí)彩旗招展。
[實(shí)際意思] 非常成功,順利地度過(guò)了難關(guān)。變形體:Come off with flying colors. 說(shuō)明:指戰(zhàn)艦凱旋歸來(lái)駛進(jìn)港口時(shí)彩旗迎風(fēng)招展的場(chǎng)景。
E.g.: She sat for the IELTS test and came out with flying colors.

9.Go into the red
Get out of the red
[字面意思]:進(jìn)入紅色/走出紅色
[實(shí)際意思] 負(fù)債,多指負(fù)債貸款/償清債務(wù)
E.g.: The bank manager usually does not allow students to go into the red.
E.g.: The Company only needs 500, 000 dollars to get out of the red.
這里的red指的是債務(wù)~ 童鞋們是不是又多了一個(gè)替換詞呢~ 以后pay off the debt可以換成get out of the red啦~
10. Horse of a different color
[字面意思]:顏色不同的馬。
[實(shí)際意思] 完全是另一碼事,另外一回事。變形體: horse of another color(另一種顏色的馬)。
E.g.: Gambling is not the same as investing in the shares market. It is a horse of a different color.
賭博和炒股不一樣,它完全是另外一回事~ 意思與another matter相同

11. An eye for an eye
[字面意思]:以眼還眼。
[實(shí)際意思]報(bào)復(fù),復(fù)仇,懲罰。說(shuō)明:A tooth for a tooth 的意思是“以牙還牙”。這兩條成語(yǔ)可放在一起用,也可用任何一個(gè),意思一樣。
E.g.: She abused him, and he insulted her; an eye for an eye.

12. Face the music
[字面意思]:面對(duì)音樂(lè)。
[實(shí)際意思] 面對(duì)批評(píng)或懲罰;接受由于自己的行為所造成的不良后果。
E.g.: You should tell your mother what happened and face the music.
小伙伴們千萬(wàn)不要理解為面對(duì)音樂(lè)哦~ 這樣是不make sense的噠~ 如果我們犯了錯(cuò),就得face the music咯~Orz
13. Have one’s head in the clouds
[字面意思]:把頭放在云層里。
[實(shí)際意思] 不實(shí)際的;不現(xiàn)實(shí)的;想入非非。
E.g.: The proposal he made was not feasible; I think he has his head in the clouds.
形容不切實(shí)際,這個(gè)詞組可是絕佳的選擇哦~
14. Have one’s heart in one’s mouth
[字面意思]:把心放在自己的嘴里。
[實(shí)際意思] 害怕,緊張。
E.g.: I had my heart in my mouth when I checked my IELTS result.
有木有!~有木有!~大家在查雅思成績(jī)的時(shí)候心里是不是都非常緊張呢~ 以后口語(yǔ)考試中用have one’s heart in one’s mouth代替nervous,瞬間感覺(jué)高大上了有木有!
15. Cost an arm and a leg
[字面意思]:花費(fèi)一條胳膊和一條腿。
[實(shí)際意思] 價(jià)格非常昂貴。變形體:Pay an arm and a leg. 兩條習(xí)語(yǔ)的是一樣的哦~
E.g.: These opera tickets cost us an arm and a leg!
不要傻傻的再用expensive這么普通的詞了~ Lexical Resource UP UP UP!!!

16. Crocodile tears
[字面意思]:鱷魚的眼淚。
[實(shí)際意思] 假悲哀;不是真心悲哀而流眼淚;貓哭耗子假慈悲。

我們中文里面也有鱷魚的眼淚這種說(shuō)法哦,形容人假惺惺的掉眼淚~
17. Rain cats and dogs
[字面意思]:(天上)下狗下貓。
[實(shí)際意思] 傾盆大雨。說(shuō)明:英語(yǔ)受北歐文化的影響。在古代北歐神話中,狗象征風(fēng),貓象征雨。“貓和狗”象征“狂風(fēng)暴雨”。
E.g.: It rained cats and dogs yesterday, so we had to cancel the football match.
天上當(dāng)然不可能下貓下狗啦~ 當(dāng)然也是不可能下錢的~~~
18. Give someone the bird
[字面意思]:給某人一只鳥(niǎo)。
[實(shí)際意思](音同拉長(zhǎng)的“不”,像是“bullshit”的省略);給某人喝倒彩。
E.g.: When the actress forgot her lines, the audience gave her the bird.
給某人一只鳥(niǎo)居然是喝倒彩的意思!~無(wú)憂小雅哥剛學(xué)會(huì)的時(shí)候,也是驚到了~
19. Kill two birds with one stone
[字面意思]:一塊石頭打中兩只鳥(niǎo)。
[實(shí)際意思] 一箭雙雕;一舉兩得。
E.g.: He killed two birds with one stone by having dinner at his tutor’s place.
相信這個(gè)習(xí)語(yǔ)童鞋們都已經(jīng)知道啦~ 但是能運(yùn)用的時(shí)候記得要用哦~
20. Put on the dog
[字面意思]:把狗帶在身上。
[實(shí)際意思] 炫耀、擺闊。竭力表現(xiàn)自我,好像自己非常重要、非常富有。但實(shí)際并非如此。
E.g.: They put on the dog in front of their guests, but the guests were not impressed.
