Steve: Nice suit Mike - you look very sharp today.

Mike: Thanks for the compliment. I have an interview for an internal promotion today.

Steve: Which department will interview you - Human Resources?

Mike: No, I already passed the HR interview. Today is with the head of the sales department.

Steve: So you want to work in sales?

Mike:. I think I would be good in sales. I know our products well and I have a silver tongue.

Steve: You think you could sell ice to the Eskimos hey?

Mike: Maybe I am not that good, but I can tell you all about the main functions of a sales department if you like.

Steve: Sure, why not.

1) Sharp: well dressed

ex:If I wore the ties that my mom chooses, I would not be so sharp!

2) Internal: inside, within

內(nèi)部的

ex:Many company like to promote their internal staff rather than look outside for new managers.

3) Silver tongue: someone who is good with words and can convince people easily

ex:I never trust people with silver tongues - you never know what is a lie and what is the truth!

Some managers say that the sales department is the most important. Without the sales department there would not be any sales. Without sales, the company would not have any income and could not pay its expenses.

The sales department often has the most staff of all of the departments in a company. Sales staff sometimes sit at a desk and make calls to customers and potential customers while others go out of the office to visit existing customers or find new ones.

Sales staff usually work on a commission basis. This means that they get a salary (sometimes called a retainer) and then get a small percentage of the sales that they make. This gives sales staff plenty of motivation to make as many sales as possible.

Sales staff must know the product or service that they are selling very well. They need to know all of the features and benefits of the product or service so that they can talk about it with customers and answer the customer's questions fully.

Some people think that it is OK for sales staff to tell lies to make a sale. Most professional sales staff know that it's not good to lie, because once the customer finds out, they won't stay a customer for long!

Ⅳ.對(duì)話篇

Beth: I have always wanted to work in our sales department.

Sally: Have you ever mentioned this to the sales manager?

Beth: No. I have never had enough courage to speak with him.

Sally: Sales staff must be able to talk to anyone without getting nervous. Why do you think you would be good in sales?

Beth: Because I know our company products really well and I think I could sell them.

Sally: But do you have a silver tongue?

Beth: Not really, but I think I could learn.

Sally: I don't like the idea of getting paid commission. I like to know how much I will earn each month.

Beth: Maybe you are right and I should just stick with Human Resources.

Sally: At least if you stay in this department we can still study English together!
