Pugs are bug-eyed on the inside, too.

A “horrifying” MRI scan of a pug, which shows its peepers bulging from the inside out, has racked up over 132,000 likes since being posted last month.

Comedian Andy Richter shared the results of his friend’s pet pug’s vet visit — namely, a scan of its crazed-looking face — in a tweet that has gone viral.

After the initial tweet went viral, Richter posted a follow-up: “I let my friend know his dog has gone viral, and he told her. She has a clean bill of health btw,” he writes, alongside a photo of the pooch basking in the sun and a text from the friend with the pug’s name redacted.

While many found the scan — mistakenly called an “X-ray” by some — amusing, experts say it is also disturbing. The reason the pug looks so strange, with its huge eyes and squashed nose, is due to inbreeding.

“Their faces have been shortened due to intensive breeding by humans, unfortunately,” London-based vet Dr. Rory Cowlam tells the Independent. “They have these massive eyes, bunched up noses . . . The condition is called brachycephalism.”

French bulldogs and Shih Tzus also suffer from the condition, which can cause significant medical issues including breathing troubles.

“We have, through human selection, bred them to look more like a human baby because we find that cute,” Cowlam says. “But unfortunately that cute look is not very good for the animal.”

This isn’t the first time Richter has put a dog in the headlines: In 2018, a tweet he wrote about his dog Kiwi’s relationship with his parrot Nacho also went viral.
