The Canberra Times reported last week that a pigeon, often considered pesky pests among urban dwellers, had been pilfering poppy flowers from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for its nest, which is tucked into the Hall of Memory, Australia’s war memorial in Canberra.

The pigeon was pictured flaunting its pile of red poppies while nestled in its eye-popping abode on the sill of a stained-glass window featuring a wounded Australian soldier. A spokesman for the memorial told the Canberra Times that the creature would be shooed once it finished with the nest.

Ironically, the beautifying bird used pigeon wire — placed on ledges to discourage them from nesting — as framework for its floral formation.

Today the country celebrates its version of Memorial Day — called Remembrance Day — to commemorate their fallen troops.

Pigeons, in fact, have a long history of military service. During World War I and II, some 54,000 homing pigeons were recruited to the U.S. Army Signal Corps based in Fort Monmouth, NJ, where they were trained alongside over 3,000 men to deliver military dispatches “under the radar.” When the program was retired in 1957, 15 “hero” pigeons were donated to zoos across the country, while the remaining were auctioned at $5 per pair. Buyers were told that if their bird were to go back to Fort Monmouth, it would be the new owners’ responsibility to retrieve it.
