Hammerhead shark wrestles with fisherman over 180-pound catch

No fisherman likes to lose a prize catch.

But when the hooked swimmer is being snatched up by a hungry hammerhead shark, well, it’s hard to say no. Such was the case for fisherman Rob Gorta.

The Florida-based fishing guide managed to catch a 180-pound tarpon and was in the process of releasing it when the even larger predator swooped in and grabbed it, according to the Daily Mail.

In a video shot with a waterproof camera, Gorta can initially be seen carefully hooking his catch: “That’s a big old tarpon right there,” he said in a video capturing the catch.

But he knew he would have to release it: “There is also no way to lift a 180lb. fish [into] a 22ft. Skeeter Bay boat,” Gorta posted alongside the video on YouTube.

Then, while doing the right thing and valiantly struggling to set free his heavyweight of the sea, Gorta encountered his unexpected problem: a shark that drops by with zero interest in taking no for an answer.

The hammerhead swiped the tarpon and Gorta let loose with a string of profanities before exclaiming, “He just took it out of my hands! He just took it out of my hands!”

The shark ate well that day, and Gorta was lucky to still have his hands. He shared his tale of woe with WFTS in Tampa Bay, Fla.

“I really felt bad for the fish, you know,” the fishing pro said. “They are an amazing fish and I make a good living off of them. There’s nothing I could really do to save that fish.”
