Glasgow Caledonian University compared a sample of people who took part in park runs nationwide - a free timed 5k run at 9am every Saturday - and those who use athletic app Strava, with those who do not run.
Eighty nine per cent of park runners said taking part made them happier; 83 per cent were motivated to exercise thanks to Strava. Running had a positive impact on mental health, helping to make people more confident, motivated and improved body image, the research found.
Women reported the greatest boost to self-confidence, with happiness measured using the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire. Dr James Bowness, one of the lead researchers, said those taking part were asked what made them happy, comparing answers from the general population on how positive their outlook was.
"People really loved the park run, and thought Strava added to the benefits," he said. "It was about being part of a community in the run. They had more confidence in their bodies, but there were a variety of things that increased their happiness. It was not just about improving health. You meet people with similar interests."
Dr Bowness, a Team GB 800m runner who took bronze at the European Team games, admitted people were often in pain during events such as the London Marathon. But he added: "You can see the elation crossing the line. It is about the feeling afterwards as well."
The late US comedian Joan Rivers once famously quipped: "The first time I see a joggers miling, I'll consider it." But runners scored an average of 4.4 in the research, compared to the average of the general population of four.
Ian Young, 44, a former soldier who suffered Post Traumatic Stress Disorder after serving in Northern Ireland, is now park run director in Blackhill, Co Durham, and said the event hadgiven him a huge sense of 'belonging and achievement'.
