S: Hello, I'd like to have a manicure.
M: Sure. Please take a seat here. The cuticles on the sides are overgrown. Would you like to have them cut or pushed back?
S: Push them back,please.
M: OK. I'II rub in some cuticle cream first.
S: The cream smells unpleasant.
M: But scented: lotions tend to make your nails brittle.
S: I see.
M: Would you like the shape square, or round?
S: Round, please. Could you also have my nails polished?
M: No problem. Which color do you prefer?
S: I like pink. By the way, how could I keep the nail polish longer?
M: Dip your hands in ice-cold water after applying nail polish. That's a good way.
S: Thank you. Women's hands say a lot about her taste.

長元音弱化為同類短元音
在口語中,長元音通常會(huì)略顯夸張,如果一些對(duì)句意影響不大的單詞中含有長元音,通常會(huì)削弱其他詞的重要性,這時(shí)長元音就要收斂一些,讀成相對(duì)應(yīng)的短元音。前文對(duì)話中顯然是在強(qiáng)調(diào)味道難聞,因此把cream這個(gè)詞中的長元音讀成短音。再如:
You are a student.這里顯然強(qiáng)調(diào)的是student,因此you讀作/j?/。
Why don't we finish it in advance?這里強(qiáng)調(diào)finish in advance,因此we讀作/w?/。
