When Arlo eventually opened his eyes, he could see something large moving toward him. But he couldn’t quite make out what it was.
Crack!
Crack!
Something was chopping the brambles in half, loosening their grip on Arlo. A flood of emotion washed over him. It was Poppa! He was standing right there! Arlo was shocked.
Poppa continued to pull the brambles off, freeing him completely. “Are you OK?” Poppa asked.
Arlo looked at Poppa uncertainly—was it true? Was it really him? “I missed you so much,” said Arlo.
Poppa smiled and curled his tail around Arlo, hugging him. “Come on,” he said gently, leading Arlo out of the brambles and away from the storm.
Boom.
Boom.
Crack! The storm continued to rage angrily. Arlo looked up. “Wait,” he said, slowing down. “Spot—I can’t leave him.”
“Spot?”
“That critter... he helped me—and now they took him into the storm.”
As the thunder roared and debris flew, Arlo flinched. He was scared, and leaned into Poppa, just like he used to.
“You can’t, Arlo,” said Poppa.
“But—he needs me!”
“No! It’s just a critter,” said Poppa firmly, frowning at Arlo.
“He’s not a critter,” Arlo said, pulling away from Poppa. “He’s my friend.” Then Arlo turned toward the pass.
“Arlo, this is bigger than you,” said Poppa.
“I know,” Arlo said. “Haven’t you ever been scared, Poppa?”
“Yes. The day I saved you from the river.”
“But you did it anyway. Because you loved me. And I love Spot.” Arlo’s eyes welled up with tears and Poppa’s stoic face melted into a smile.
“I knew you had it in you,” Poppa said proudly. “Go take care of that critter.”
Poppa turned and faded into the rain, leaving no footprints behind him.
Arlo opened his eyes. He was still caged in a tangle of brambles. Poppa had only been a dream.
But Arlo felt different... he felt determined. As the rain poured down, he strained to break free—
Snap!
Snap!
Snap!
The brambles were breaking. He continued, snapping them one section at a time until he was able to push through and get himself out. Then he ran off to find Spot.
