And we can enjoy this smashing view of the Thames, while snacking on our biscuits. So here we are, cruising down the river on a Sunday afternoon to Greenwich. You can get there by train, but the ideal way to get to this most nautical city in this very nautical nation is by boat.

From Westminster Pier, it's a leisurely one-hour-trip down river to Greenwich.

Christopher Wren's twin domes carefully frame the Queen's House, which had been designed the century before by Inigo Jones. It's a satisfying blend of work from Britain’s two big names in architecture.

The Royal Naval College now houses a museum with an unrivaled display of Britain's naval history, including things like boats from prehistoric to modern times, a history of James Cook’s explorations, and Maritime Memorabilia, including the uniform Nelson was wearing when he was killed at the battle of Trafalgar. You can see the fatal bullet hole.

The old Royal Observatory is now part of the museum.

While the serious stargazing gear has been moved away from the bright lights and smog, you can still tightrope on the Prime Meridian, that line that separates the East Hemisphere from the west and you can still gawk at the clock that sets Greenwich meantime.
