Savvy 9第九招
Stress in Phrases 短語(yǔ)重讀
1. Stress the first word
重音在第一個(gè)單詞
When two individual words go through the cultural process of becoming a set phrase, the original sense of each word is more or less forgotten and the new meaning completely takes over. In set phrases, the first word is stressed. Also stress the first word with Street and nationalities of food and people.
兩個(gè)獨(dú)立的單詞經(jīng)過(guò)文化演變,成為一個(gè)固定詞組后,詞組里每一個(gè)單詞的原意都不多不少地被遺忘,取而代之的是新的詞義。在固定詞組里,重讀第一個(gè)單詞。有Street一詞的詞組、食物的原產(chǎn)地和人的國(guó)籍也需重讀第一個(gè)單詞。
English teacher, French class, White House, green house, dark room, atom bomb, mountain climbing, police car, body building, cable car, handout, outcome, interview, Bond Street.
2. Stress the Second Word
重音在第二個(gè)單詞
○1 When you have an ordinary descriptive adjective + noun combination that gives new or descriptive information that just happens to be the case at that time and could change, or a logical exception to a set phrase where the meaning is significantly changed, then the second word is stressed.
如果形容詞與名詞一起在特定情況下組成一個(gè)普通描述性的詞組,而這個(gè)詞組是可以變化的;或者當(dāng)一個(gè)固定詞組作為詞組本身的一個(gè)合乎邏輯的例外出現(xiàn)而使其意思發(fā)生了重大改變時(shí),重讀應(yīng)在第二個(gè)單詞。
English teacher (from England), French class (Gallic style), a white house (any house that happens to be white), a green house, a dark room, atomic bomb, recreational vehicle, public official, city hall, social security, foreign affairs, down payment.
○2 Institutions, names, place names, titles, initials, chemical compounds, colors, and numbers, the noun following a number, reflexive pronouns, personal pronouns, compound verbs and most street designations (except when combined with Street) also take the stress in the last element.
機(jī)構(gòu)、人名、地名、官銜、詞首字母、化合物、顏色和數(shù)字,后跟有數(shù)字的名詞、反身代詞、人稱(chēng)物主代詞、復(fù)合動(dòng)詞和街道名稱(chēng)(有Street一詞的詞組例外)都把重音放在最后。
Smithsonian Institution; James Brown; New York; Berkeley, California; Vice President; Secretary of State; London Times; LA; zinc oxide; blue green; Colt 45; 10 percent; myself; her own; his best; their car; understand; Fifth Avenue; Sunnybrook Lane; Wilshire Boulevard; Taykida Way; Beverly Drive, Sunset Road
3.Stress Both Words
兩個(gè)單詞都重讀
○1 When the first word is a material, ingredient or component of the second, then both words are stressed.
如果第一個(gè)單詞是第二個(gè)單詞的原材料、成份或組成部分的話,那么兩個(gè)單詞都重讀。
Beef stew, peach pie, brick wall, silk shirt, gold watch, rubber duck
○2 Both words are stressed for the possessive.
所有格的兩個(gè)單詞都要重讀。
In a pig's eye, a snowball's chance, a man's man, a king's ransom
