Asylum Crises in Australia simmers down

Age is no barrier(1) to misery(2) in Australia’s detention(3) centers.This 14-year-old boy is among those asylum(4) seekers at western Australia’s port Headland facility who’ve sewn their lips together. Others making desperate(5) and futile(6) attempts to break out of the barbed wire【帶刺的鐵絲網(wǎng)】 compound. These scenes have put Australia under international scrutiny(7). Treasurer Peter Costello was forced on the defensive(8) during an interview with CNN.

Peter Costello: “They have good recreational(9) facilities ; they have very good medical care. ”

The governments tough stand appeared to have paid off. During a news conference immigration(10) minister Phillip Roderick was informed(11) that the Woomera hunger strike was over, but he declined(12) to call it a win.

Phillip Roderick: “I don’t think it’s appropriate(13) to call it a victory, I mean these are human issues.”

The end of the protest followed the intervention(14) of the governments independent immigration detention advisory group which went to Woomera to negotiate(15) with the detainees【被拘留者】.

“It was a very emotional(16) moment. And it really got me”. Refugee advocates(17) say Mr. Roderick must now offer concessions(18) in return for the inmate’s【被收容者】decision.

“They’ve shown good faith with the Australian people in stepping back and it’s time that we did too.”
